Vikings quarterback Sam Bradford returns Sunday to Philadelphia to take on the Eagles, who traded him for a first-round draft pick just before the season started. Both sides appear to be winners in the trade, as Bradford is starting for a Super Bowl contender, while the Eagles appear to have their QB of the future in Carson Wentz. Both will be looking to prove a point, but I think the Eagles are the value side in a battle of two top-five defensive clubs. Look for them to bounce back from two close defeats and send Minnesota to its first loss.
This is the juncture of the season in which I customarily start playing against the unbeatens, especially overachieving ones. This time? Vikes, baby. Dating to late last season, the most any foe has scored on them is 17 points. Their yardage yield this season is 4.4, stingiest in the league. And while Philly QB Carson Wentz has looked nothing like a rookie, he has yet to see a pass rush as relentless as this one. While the bye may put the brakes on its momentum, Minnesota won’t lose to a team that started 3-0 but is returning to the mean.
I've said the past two weeks the Eagles' rating was increased way too high after beating the Steelers in Week 3, but after tough losses at Detroit and Washington, their rating has fallen through the roof and is closer to what it was when the season started. They're getting +3 at home this week? That is crazy. I love what the Vikings are doing, but they don't have the offensive metrics to merit that spread. Even if we knew nothing about Carson Wentz, this would be a great spot for Philly at home.
Not the "sharpest" play you'll see from me this year, but I can't ignore the mismatch with Philly's rookie right tackle -- who got abused by Washington -- facing the league's top defense. Carson Wentz got pressured on 13 of his 27 dropbacks last week and I see more of the same Sunday. Plus, Bennie Logan's groin injury should help the Vikings jumpstart their running game. This moneyline price is a little cheap considering the spread, so I'll back the rested Vikes to merely stay perfect.
