NBA expected to declare Kobe MVP at news conference

LOS ANGELES -- The NBA has scheduled a news conference for Tuesday at a Los Angeles hotel, where Kobe Bryant is expected to be announced as winner of his first Most Valuable Player award.

Neither NBA spokesman Mark Broussard nor the Lakers would discuss the subject of the news conference, although the league did refer to it as an NBA Awards Announcement.

The Los Angeles Times reported last Friday that the 29-year-old Bryant had won the award. League spokesman Brian McIntyre refused to confirm or deny the report on Saturday.

"I didn't know if it was going to come in my career, but to have the moment come now is special, especially to share it with the group of guys we have here," Bryant told reporters Saturday. "We talked about (how) winning this MVP is extremely special because that means I'm doing good. I'm making my teammates better, putting them in a position to win."

Bryant, who entered the season as the league's two-time defending scoring champion, had finished as high as third in the MVP voting twice -- after the 2002-03 campaign, when he averaged 30 points for the first time, and again last year, when Dallas' Dirk Nowitzki won the award and two-time MVP Steve Nash finished second.

Bryant averaged 28.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 1.84 steals while playing in all 82 games despite tearing a ligament in his right pinkie finger in February. A hand specialist recommended surgery, but Bryant decided to put it off until after the Olympics this summer.

Bryant is expected to receive the MVP trophy Wednesday night from commissioner David Stern before the Lakers face the Utah Jazz in Game 2 of their best-of-seven second-round playoff series. The Lakers won the opener 109-98 on Sunday.

Bryant, second in the NBA in scoring behind Cleveland's LeBron James, would be the first member of the Lakers to win the MVP award since Shaquille O'Neal was a near-unanimous choice in 2000. Other previous Lakers to win the award dating back to 1956 when it was first presented were Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Magic Johnson, who won it three times each. Abdul-Jabbar also won three with the Milwaukee Bucks.

Bryant and O'Neal led the Lakers to three consecutive NBA championships, from 2000-02, and a berth in the NBA finals in 2004. The Lakers hadn't won a playoff series since then until sweeping the Denver Nuggets in the first round last month.

I'm so tired of people talking about MVP to his team.  Is it the NBA MVP award? Or is it the MVP THT award?

I always thought it was the former.  But lately, it seems all people can talk about is the MVP To His Team.

I'll answer my own question.  It is the Most Valuable Player in the League award.  Who has been the most valuable th ...(more)

How does a 30-7-7-1-1 guy walk away from 2008 empty-handed. Lebron plays much better defense and is a team-first guy. When someone's got the hot hand he finds them in the corner, unlike Kobe who tries to create shots for himself. Kobe is a great player but this season LeBron carried his team through injuries and holdouts. He is the most valuable player for his team, Without him the Cavs are a ...(more)

While he might not be the most valuable to his team he is definitely the best player in the league. While being the best offensive player he is still a top 10 defensive player so stop hating

Kobe Bryant was awarded his first MVP award today after 11 previous seasons of being unable to get the prestigious honor. He was near the top of the NBA in scoring and led a team many considered to not be all that great to the number one seed in a tough western conference. It was a deserved award for the multiple all-star, finally ...(more)

That's actually a pretty good way of predicting an MVP.  We'd like to think that it's the player whose (presumably winning) team could not win without.  In that case, there's a pretty extensive tie between Chris Paul, Kobe, Lebron, Dwight ...(more)

Why not decide until after the Western Conference. Clearly at this point through the regular season and the playoffs Chris Paul is just as deserving if not more deserving.

He is proclaimed as the best point guard since Pistol Pete...After New Orleans wins the Western Conference final and eventually the NBA championshi ...(more)

All year long I've heard it. Interview after interview. From the lowly players to LeBron James. When Kobe puts up big numbers, they say, "Well that's what you expect from the best player in the world."

Or 'he's the best player in the world and he proved it again tonight."

I would ...(more)

Kobe winning Mvp this year was a no-brainer. It should've been Kobe's 4th mvp, not first. He's pretty much been the best player in the league for what the last 6 years? Best player on offense and defense. The best clutch player in the game, the best competitor. A winner. A champion. Plus he led L.A to the best record in the West playing with a torn ligament in his hand, and with a f ...(more)

Nothing against Cp3 or Lebron they are both great players who had spectacular seasons. Lebron put up awesome numbers this year but his team still struggled to get the 4 seed in an eastern conference that is miles behind the west as far as good teams go. Cp3's Hornets had a great run goin back and forth with ...(more)
