Mayweather branches out at WrestleMania 24

Here at CBSSports.com, it's rare for us to cover a pro wrestling event. Then again, it's kind of a special occasion when almost 75,000 people converge in one venue for something other than a football game. It's also a special occasion when a household name like "Nature Boy" Ric Flair wrestles his last match, one day after going into the WWE Hall of Fame while still a full-time member of its roster.

And it's rare for boxing superstar Floyd "Money" Mayweather to do something other than box in a ring, especially against an "opponent" three times his size.

WWE is sports entertainment, not sport. But when you witness the sheer spectacle that is WrestleMania first-hand, you see many of the same traits that the fans of competitive sports love. At the Citrus Bowl in Orlando on Sunday evening, you had it all. The smell of overpriced hot dogs. Every kind of licensed WWE merchandise you could every possibly want to own. A jam-packed stadium full of fans. A contingent of legit wrestling legends, one night removed from entering the Hall of Fame. A full crew of performers backstage -- some of them tremendously gifted athletes, others over-the-top characters or flashy crowd pleasers, and one guy in a class all by himself in Ric Flair -- who left it all in the ring during their matches.

On this night, WWE had a guy we follow very closely here at CBSSports.com, who also happens to be a charismatic entertainer. In the latest effort by Floyd Mayweather to broaden his celebrity status beyond the sport of boxing, his dance partner was decidedly uglier.

For his "David vs. Goliath" match against the 440-pound Big Show, Mayweather strutted down the aisle with his full posse backing him up. In a fitting special effect, it rained cash on the fans during his saunter to the ring. (By the way: If you think Mayweather is really getting $20 million for this, you're dreaming.)

The only thing big about Mayweather were his XXL trunks -- even his gloves were smaller than the norm. He danced around Big Show and tagged him with quick jabs while the big guy swatted at him to no avail. Show upped the ante by dragging one of Mayweather's cornermen into the ring and slapping him with a bare-chested chop. When he caught up to Mayweather, he tried to stomp on his hand (making good on an earlier promise to end his boxing career). He failed, and Mayweather responded by climbing the turnbuckles and putting Show in a sleeper hold. Show walked around the ring trying to shake him off, and when he finally did so, he got that hand stomp he was looking for.

Show then slapped Mayweather's chest in the corner with a chop. Mayweather fired back with some shots, but fell victim to a side slam. He stood on Mayweather's fallen body with both feet, drawing some gasps from the crowd. Show landed an elbow drop, and at that point Mayweather looked dead. His corner dragged him out of the ring by the feet and tried escaping back down the aisle. Show chased them, and dragged Mayweather back to the ring for more abuse. The crowd was laughing at Mayweather, probably mostly due to the downright comical size difference.

Show lifted Mayweather off the ground with a choke, but before he could finish the choke slam, a cornerman hit Show in the back with a steel folding chair. Show turned and choke slammed that guy, then turned around to eat a pair of chair shots from Floyd himself (one gut, one back). On a third swing of the steel, Show grabbed Mayweather by the neck again. This time, Mayweather escaped with that old boxing standby: a kick in the crotch.

Mayweather got his biggest reaction out of the crowd with a right hand that dropped Show face-first to the canvas. Mayweather, by the way, was holding a foreign object (brass knuckles) when he threw the punch. With that, Mayweather scored the pinfall for his first -- and possibly only -- pro wrestling win.

Full results from WrestleMania 24 at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando:

  • World Heavyweight Title: The Undertaker defeated Edge via submission to a gogoplata to win the title and remain undefeated at WrestleMania.
  • Floyd "Money" Mayweather beat The Big Show via knockout after a right hook with a foreign object.
  • Triple Threat Match: WWE Champion Randy Orton retained his title against Triple H and John Cena after he kicked Triple H as he was pinning Cena after a pedigree, and then pinned Cena himself.
  • BunnyMania Lumberjack Match: Beth Phoenix & Melina beat Ashley & Maria when Phoenix pinned Maria after a fisherman's suplex. During the match, the main lighting above the ring went out and the match went a few moments in the dark. They finished the match with the use of spotlights.
  • Shawn Michaels defeated Ric Flair via pinfall after a superkick. The match was Ric Flair's final performance as an active wrestler.
  • Kane pinned ECW Champion Chavo Guerrero Jr. after a choke slam to win the title.
  • Batista pinned Umaga after a powerbomb.
  • Money in the Bank Ladder Match: C.M. Punk defeated John Morrison, Carlito, Shelton Benjamin, Mr. Kennedy, MVP and Chris Jericho to earn the right to challenge for any title in WWE at a time of his choosing within the next year.
  • Belfast Brawl: John Bradshaw Layfield defeated Finlay via pinfall after the clothesline from hell.
  • Kane won a 24-Man Battle Royal for a same-night shot at the ECW Championship.

John Legend opened the show with his rendition of "America the Beautiful." Kim Kardashian served as honorary backstage interviewer. Raven Simone came out to the ring to thank WWE for working closely with the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Snoop Dogg acted as the "Master of Ceremonies" for the BunnyMania women's tag team match, featuring the team of Ashley Massaro and Maria Kanellis, both of whom have bared all for Playboy.

The announced attendance was 74,635.

Mayweather branches out at WrestleMania 24

This WrestleMania would rank somewhere in the middle of the pack for me. Not good enough to call it great, not bad enough to say it stunk. Have seen better, have seen worse.

I really expected to see some sort of "blood" from either JBL or Finlay in their match.

Kane really deserves a long title run with the ECW belt.

Shawn Michaels & Ric Flair should have closed the show in my view.

Thank god Batista vs Umaga didn't turn into Goldberg vs Lesnar.

Sick and tired of seeing Big Show used as a mark for someone else, when if ever will he get a long deserved extended title run like Cena or Hogan has.

Hopefully 'Taker doesn't get hurt this year and he gets a well deserved title run.

No one saw Orton's win coming.

Can't sat right now which belt C.M. Punk will challenge for, hopefully in my view it's not on ECW.

I almost completely agree with you Vikings. Wasn't great wasn't horrible, but it was fun to watch.

I think the HBK/Flair match was at the right time. At this point in his 36 year career that was Flair's style. He earned the right to go out on his own terms, and I feel that he didn't want to make Wrestlemainina all about him. He wanted a great match to finish it (which he got) against a future HOF (which he got) who just happened to be one of his closest friends in the business. I promise that wil be the only time we ever see HBK mouth the words "I'm sorry. I love you." before delivering his patented Superkick.

The JBL/Finlay match was a dissapointing opening. Would have been much more entertaining if they had opened each other up. Would have followed the storyline better too.

As for Kane, I've been waiting for them to do something bigger with him. He's certainly been around long enough. I do think that they may have to modify the character somewhat if they want him to carry the ECW brand for a length of time.

Batista and Umaga didn't turn into Goldberg/Lesnar, but it almost did. I think it could've been a better match, wasn't horrible. Umaga is a typical Samoan. Huge, but sick talented. He certainly could follow in his family's footsteps (Pete Maiavi, The Rock, Yokozuna, etc.).

Show is a victem of his own size. There aren't enough things you can do with him. Having him dominate would be too obvious. I do think he's earned a long run.

Taker is what he always has been. The Phenom. I was happy though that they let this one play out the way it did. I don't like Edge but I love that they made this match legit. It was an epic display of power, counters, and pure hatred. Up until now, Edge has been viewed as sort of a joke. He's never really legitimately won a title. Now he's stood toe to toe with the benchmark. He lost,(which everyone should have seen comming, no way is Edge the guy to break the streak.) but his character has gained a measure of respect.

CM Punk. It's time for him to step into the limelight. I have a feeling that he will challenge for the WWE title. I think they want to make him the next big thing, and what better way to endear him to fans than to have him "Punk" Orton....nobody wants to see Orton as the champ. Which brings me to my last point..........

ANYBODY BUT ORTON. Cena, HHH, CM Punk, Y2J, I don't care. Just please get that friggin metrosexual off my screen.

Wrestlemania was good.  It is tough for me to put it in perspective because I was at Wrestlemanias 18 (Toronto) and 23 (Detroit).  It is awesome going live and Wrestlemania 18 produced the Rock vs. Hogan legendary match.  As far as the matches I'm glad CM Punk got the win, he must be getting Jeff Hardy's spot. I just wish Umaga had won, I'm kind of done with Batista and I think Umaga is under utilized. Umaga should be repushed as a monster heel.

Let me say that I'm not a big wrestling fan, but I did watch the entire thing.  Mainly because I was at somebody's house that ordered it.  But do you think that this edtion may have turned some fans off?  To watch little ole Mayweather beat up Big Show, didn't that seem a little bit ludicrous?  I know he is a good boxer, probably the best pound for pound in boxing, but there is NO way that big son of a gun shouldn't have crushed him bad.  All the people I watched with were saying they probably wounldn't watch wrestling anymore.  Just wondering what most fans think about it.  And do you think it was really worth $60?

I thought that the way they did the mayweather-big show match fit perfectly, mayweather utilized his speed, and show couldnt catch him, and once he did catch him, he stomped on him like he should, and the ending is fitting seeing as they couldnt have mayweather lose because that would have "messed up" his undefeated streak.  As for the rest of the night, the reason they didnt really have blood in the Finlay-JBL match is because it was the first match and you cant start off with blood and not continue that streak the rest of the night, although im suprised with how hard they were hitting each other that one of them didnt open up the other. The money in the bank ladder match suprised me, i though for sure they would give jericho a push, but i guess i was wrong...cm punk will get a wwe title shot soon. the rest of the night was good.

The mayweather fight was totally stupid. mayweather is annoying and thats all. i know wrestling is fake but come on. the only good matches were undertakers match and flairs which was the best. belfast brawl aka no dq match-lame, cm punk winning money in the bank- lame, bunnymania- give me a break, orton winning- (ok match but im just pissed he won) lame! Overall not a great mania. I would have rather watched only the two good matches and a special on flair.

I rate the show a solid B.  No real shockers,  No blood.  What lacks in WWE is the ability of the new talent to rise up.  Flair and HBK were the pop of the show.  Taker was the obvious choice but Edge is coming along.  He needs to quit doing these stupid pranks and gimmicks.

Pretty soon, HBK, HHH and Taker will retire just like Flair.  There doesnt seem to be a Rock, Stone Cold or Hogan type of performer waiting in the wings.

WWE will not survive with clone Ortons, Batistas and Cenas.  They cant carry the crowds because they really cant wrestle and they cant sell the product.

(Example...did anyone notice how much time The Rock got during the Hall of Rock...er...Fame special?)  Wow is he missed!!!

I watched and read online about the HOF ceremony. The actual ceremony went 4 1/2 hrs with Flair going 90 minutes. I would love, LOVE to see the ROCK come back and wrestle one of the 3 he mentioned (HBK, Cena, & Mysterio.) But that would be a dream. WM 25 HBK vs ROCKY. What a match that would be!

I think Taker would retire 1st followed by HBK then HHH. HHH still has a few good years left.
