When it comes to wits, Tressel miles ahead of Les

Freeman: Miles dumb? Get smart, people

LSU coach Les Miles is lucky the BCS national championship game isn't a board game between the coaches. If they were playing checkers, Ohio State's Jim Tressel would quadruple-jump Miles into submission. If they were playing chess, Miles would ask to play checkers.

I don't think Les Miles is very smart. Sorry, I don't. He doesn't look smart, for one thing. He could have been the lead character in Sling Blade. His eyes are too close together. I bet I could jam a thumb over the bridge of his nose and poke both pupils.

You're darn right Jim Tressel has the upper hand in this coaching matchup. (AP)

Looks can be deceiving, of course. Despite looking dumb, Les Miles could actually be smart. Except he doesn't act smart. And this is why he cannot beat Jim Tressel on Monday night in the BCS title game.

At some point the game between these two evenly matched teams -- easily two of the top four teams in the country, behind Southern Cal and Georgia -- will come down to a coaching battle of wits, and that's simply not fair. Tressel is cold and calculating, a coaching reptile. Miles is a nitwit.

Here's what I know, and it's all I need to know: Miles risked this entire season, and his entire reputation, on the Michigan job. That thing came open at a bad time for Miles, a Michigan alumnus. There's no question about that. The timing wasn't Miles' fault, but what happened next was.

Miles clearly had people negotiating with Michigan on his behalf, even as LSU was preparing to play Tennessee in the SEC Championship Game, and when the Miles-Michigan dalliance hit the media, all hell broke loose in both states.

Every day was a disaster, media asking players if they were distracted and Miles trying to play it cool and Michigan smugly carrying on as if it had its next coach -- Les Miles -- in the bag.

Somehow LSU overcame the distractions created by its head coach, beating Tennessee for the SEC title and, lo and behold, a spot in the BCS Championship Game.

You ask me, LSU got lucky that day. LSU won't get lucky against Ohio State, and it has nothing to do with the talent. On a player-for-player basis, LSU probably has more speed and skill than Ohio State. The recruiting rankings over the past four years would say so. The 2008 NFL Draft scouting reports would say the same. Ohio State has talent ... but LSU has more.

But when it comes to coaching, LSU has Les.

Which means Ohio State has more.

You know how I feel about Les Miles. Now let's discuss Tressel.

no doubt in my mind i would take jim tressel over les miles. Les is was too risky he gets is 3-6 times those arent good odds. Tressel plays smart ball you cant argue about that. He is a very cautious coach

Les Miles has outcoached...

Urban Meyer

Nick Saban

Steve Spurrier

Tommy Tubberville

Last time I checked all those coaches were well respected.  Uh...three of them have national championships.  I don't think the criticism of MIles is justified.  People only criticize him because he doesn't coach the way that 90 % of coaches do with a ...(more)

I hope you don't bet on games, because for a boy that grew up in the south, you don't know jack about the SEC. In the future, I recommend not submitting articles when you are a.) high or b.) drunk. Tressell sure did look like a genius getting his butt kicked out there tonight and Les Miles really looked stupid mopping up the field with a sorry looking Ohio State team. Might I suggest extra ketc ...(more)

What a dousche you are. Talking out of your ass as always. And naturally you won't print a retraction. All you know how to do is throw around asinine opinions like they're gospel. I'd like to think you'd remember this the next time you're considering posting another I-know-everything-just-wait-and-you'll-see opinion piece. But you won't, you'll find some excuse why your last prediction didn't come ...(more)

I didn't like the way this article "looked".  I think it needed more colors then the boring black-fonts on white background...so I'm gonna go ahead and say it's not very good.

So now we're judging coaches based on their looks?

Is this an actual CBS-Sportsline article?

is this guy smoking crack? first he insults the look of a coach (obviously, doyel doesnt have a mirror!) then he says lsu and osu are in the top 4, right behind usc and georgia. the media loves offensive teams. u put up 40,50 pts on the board and the media thinks you're the greatest teams in the world. if you got 6 pts for every goal in hockey and soccer, those two sports would be huge in t ...(more)

As both of these coaches are talented and good at what they do, as eveidenced by the fact that both their teams were invited to the BCS-computer-generated-so-call
ed "national championship"; this is still college football.

Upsets are as prevelant as games themselves, so there should be little emphasis placed on these minor "on-paper" ...(more)

Wasn't this God-like coach from Ohio State out coached top to bottom in the championship game last year? It was an embarassing display.

Though my memory is not 100%, I remember Tressel hitting the Panic Button early in that one by going for it deep in his own territory. I might be wrong but I recalling watching that and thinking that he was rattled and just threw anyway any shot the ...(more)

I am an OSU fan and I even think this is a stupid article.  Doyel, your attempt to be a shock writer was weak.  Poking fun at how Miles looks is ironic, considering your appearance.

I think Les Miles is a good coach and probably deserves more credit than most people give him.

I agree that Miles is a moron.  I kept telling people that the Michigan faithful should be careful of what they wish for, they might get it (Miles as coach).  I'm a Florida fan so I've seen Miles for a few years up close and have seen him waste "the best talent" for a couple of years now.  He's not very good and will be worse when Satan's disciples (Nick ...(more)
