LSU's Miles kicks starting-QB-to-be Perrilloux off team

NEW ORLEANS -- Ryan Perrilloux seemed like a perfect fit for LSU.

The Louisiana native had the rocket arm, mobility and versatility to make him a constant big-play threat and one of the most sought-after quarterback prospects in the country. He even had the French last name.

In spurts as a backup or fill-in starter last season, the sophomore showed the potential to rise to stardom, winning MVP honors in the Tigers' Southeastern Conference championship game triumph over Tennessee.

His lack of discipline off the field, however, became an increasing distraction for head coach Les Miles, who finally decided Perrilloux's presence on the roster was more trouble than it was worth.

Perrilloux was kicked off the defending national championship team Friday after a college career marked by legal and disciplinary problems.

Perrilloux "didn't fulfill his obligation as an LSU student-athlete," Miles said in a statement. "Ryan was given every opportunity to be a part of this football team."

Miles did not attribute his decision to any specific recent violation.

Still, it was clear Perrilloux's repeated breaking of team rules, and sometimes the law, made Miles worry whether it was worth keeping the talented heir-apparent to the starting job and risk another off-the-field distraction next season.

The timing of Miles' decision gives Perrilloux a chance to transfer to a lower-division program by next fall.

"We hope that a new beginning will benefit him," Miles said. "I wish Ryan and his family nothing but the best in any of his future endeavors."

The move also allows LSU to go into the summer without any lingering questions over whether Perrilloux, who was suspended during spring drills for missing team meetings and classes, would rejoin them when practice resumed in August and behave like a leader thereafter.

A backup to Matt Flynn last season, Perrilloux showed glimpses of great promise, drilling receivers downfield or punishing tacklers while running the option.

He played sparingly in LSU's victory over Ohio State for the national title. But the starting job for this coming season appeared to be his, provided he could avoid trouble off the field.

Coach Miles is not playing around at LSU. I like the fact he tried to give this kid a chance. Ryan Perriloux just couldn't get it. I like the fact the Miles had the balls to kick his number one prossibility at QB off the team.

Seriously though, as an LSU fan, I could see the writing on the wall when he was suspended earlier this year.

Exactly what did this idiot Perriloux finally do to get kicked off the team?  I guess the bar fights, the counterfeiting, the gambling (where did he get the money to gamble, anyway?), those things were okay.  But now according to Les Miles he "didn't fulfill his obligations as an LSU student-athlete?"  Are you kidding?  Since when does the SEC have student-athletes?&n ...(more)

I am far from being a fan of Les Miles or LSU, but I have to tip my hat to him.  Good job on dismissing Ryan Perriloux and with such class too.  He simply wished him and his family the best and washed his hands of the troubled prep star.  It's about time!  How many chances do we give star athletes?  I'm tired of these college athletes thinking they are better than anybody ...(more)

Not to often in this day in age when a college football coach is willing to kick anybody who disobeys his rules off the team, no matter how famous or superstar or vital to the team as a player they are.  Hats off to Les Miles for not letting Ryan become the oss of him.  Hopefully Ryan will learn from his idocracy but not at LSU. Good, good.

If you add SER to the end of his name, I think it says it all.  He should have been released from his scholarship last year.  Well done Miles, or the athletic department for finally saying enough is enough.  Cant wait to see what idiotic program picks him up.

We at texas wanted him...badly...and were all pissed when he signed with LSU...

We got colt instead...and all i can say is "thank you for making the mistake we almost made."

We get enough players into "minor" criminal activities (specially pot usage) we didn't need anything bigger...

This guy could have been a top 5 draft pick with 1 or 2 years as LSU's starter, but despite all that has happened he is 3 years out of highschool and has the talent to play at the pro level, someone would give him a chance although his contract would be very small. People will always give talent a chance. He could transfer to another school but he has probably blown his draft position he will prob ...(more)

I respect that he didn't put a talented player above the team and the program.  I have no doubt that another QB on their roster will step up and fill in the void.  I can't remember the last time LSU had problems recruiting.

Good luck Tigers.

P.S.  Thanks for taking care of Bo 'till he returned home.
