NHL's 2019-20 regular season would have ended Saturday; Rangers were overall best bet

The NHL regular season would have ended on Saturday under normal circumstances.

The final day of any NHL regular season is always very entertaining because playoff spots are on the line. Today, April 4, every team in the league other than the Columbus Blue Jackets was to complete the 2019-20 regular season, but of course it remains on suspension since March 12 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Will the NHL be able to restart the regular season in some fashion? That seems highly, highly unlikely because hockey simply doesn't lend itself to being played in the warmer months that are upcoming and no U.S. league seems likely to restart until June 1 at the earliest. The NBA, meanwhile, could in theory put all 16 playoff teams in one location (Las Vegas?) because gyms are everywhere.

That means the final game of the 2019-20 NHL regular season will probably be Los Angeles' 3-2 home victory over Ottawa late the night of March 11. The final goal of the season was scored by the Kings Martin Frk at 15:19 of the third period at Staples Center.

Edmonton's Leon Draisaitl would win the Art Ross Trophy as the league's leading scorer as the German had 110 points. He was the only player to hit triple digits. The Maurice Rocket Richard Trophy for the top goal-scorer would be split by Washington's Alex Ovechkin and Boston's David Pastrnak as both had 48 goals.

It would be the whopping ninth time Ovechkin would win the award, which debuted in the 1998-99 season. No other player has won it more than twice. Pastrnak likely will win the Hart Trophy as league MVP because the Bruins top the league in points.

The New York Rangers were the best bet in the league in terms of overall money units won at approximately +$1200 (per $100 wager on all of their games) while the Detroit Red Wings were the worst at around -$2400. The Capitals led the league with 43 games Over the total, while the Dallas Stars were first with 42 going Under.

If there are Stanley Cup playoffs at some point in the coming months, William Hill sportsbook lists the Vegas Golden Knights as +500 favorites to win their first Cup and the Bruins next at +550.
