When Redskins have won and covered past 2 years, total has heavy lean to under

The Washington Redskins have been a great under bet on the total when they win and cover of late.

The Washington Redskins haven't been very good the past two seasons, winning a total of 10 games. Because the Redskins were underdogs in most of them or short favorites in a few, they have covered the spread in nine of those 10. The one time they didn't was Week 6 last year when the Skins were 6-point favorites on the NFL odds in Miami and prevailed 17-16.

That was a rather fortunate victory as the Dolphins went for a 2-point conversion in the final seconds instead of kicking the PAT and going to overtime. It was also Washington's first game after firing Coach Jay Gruden.

Gruden was an offensive-minded coach as a former OC of the Cincinnati Bengals. What's interesting is that over the past two seasons when Washington did win and cover those nine times, seven went Under the total. That Over-Under percentage of 22.2 is the worst in the NFL over that span by any team in a game it won and covered.

The two Redskins games in that scenario that went Over the total:

Sept. 23, 2018 – Total was set at 46 and the Redskins (+2.5) beat the visiting Green Bay Packers 31-17. Alex Smith was still Washington's starting QB then.

Dec. 1, 2019 – Total was set at 38.5 and the Redskins (+10.5) won at the Carolina Panthers 29-21. That would be Washington's final win of last season and also the final game as Panthers head coach for Ron Rivera. He's now in the same role with Washington.

The totals have been set for Washington's first two games this season: 45 vs. Philadelphia Week 1 and 46 in Arizona Week 2. The past three times the Skins have beaten and covered vs. the Eagles (not since 2016), the total has gone Over. Washington has won and covered its past two vs. Arizona (2017-18) and both went Under the total.

The Redskins have a win total of 5.5 at William Hill sportsbook in Rivera's first season.
