Patriots vs. Steelers NFL Week 2 injury report, odds: Mac Jones likely good to go after practicing, will not have to worry about T.J. Watt

Patriots quarterback Mac Jones practiced on Wednesday so he should be fine to play Sunday in Pittsburgh.

The New England offense in the post-Josh McDaniels play-calling era looked quite bad all preseason and in camp, and nothing much improved in Week 1 as the Patriots lost 20-7 in Miami and totaled just 271 yards. Starting quarterback Mac Jones was sent for X-rays on his back afterward, but it apparently his malady was just back spasms. He participated in the team's first practice of the week Wednesday and should be good to start Sunday in Pittsburgh. The Steelers will not have reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year T.J. Watt available. The Patriots are -2 at Caesars Sportsbook.

Jones was 21-for-30 for 213 yards with a 6-yard touchdown pass to Ty Montgomery and a pick in the loss to Miami. Afterward, he walked under his own power to the X-ray room flanked by security personnel. Jones said Monday he believed the injury occurred on a fourth-quarter play in which the Dolphins were flagged for roughing the passer. He was only sacked twice by the Miami defense, but took some heavy hits throughout.

"I just kept playing and tried to work through it," Jones said. "It's football -- you're going to get hit. I've been hit harder before and will probably get hit harder in the future. It's all good."

On Wednesday, Jones did some stretching and throwing while the media was allowed to watch the full-pads workout. The first injury report will be out later today. Montgomery will not be playing for a while, though, as he was placed on injured reserve Tuesday with a knee injury. He rushed twice for minus-2 yards on Sunday and caught three passes for 15 yards, including the lone TD.

Including this past Sunday, the Patriots have been held to 10 or fewer points in five games over the past three seasons. In the entirety of the 2010s with a guy named Tom Brady under center, the Patriots were held to 10 or fewer points in seven games.

This Sunday will be the first Patriots-Steelers game since 1998 that will not feature one of Brady or Ben Roethlisberger – that 1998 game was quarterbacked by Drew Bledsoe & Kordell Stewart. The Patriots have not started 0-2 since 2001, the year they won their first Super Bowl.

Pittsburgh's Watt tore a pectoral muscle in the Week 1 upset of Cincinnati and will not need surgery, but is still expected to miss about six weeks. Last season, Watt logged 22.5 sacks to tie the NFL's single-season sack record. He had one on Sunday as well. Watt had been favored with the Rams' Aaron Donald to win Defensive Player of the Year again, but the injury has seen Watt's odds rise to +3000 at Caesars. He's now +5000 to win the sack title again. Malik Reed is expected to start at edge rusher in Watt's absence.
