NFL Week 2: San Francisco 49ers RB Tevin Coleman ruled out against Cincinnati Bengals with ankle injury

While the team's performance wasn't always pretty in Week 1, the San Francisco 49ers started the 2019 NFL season on a high note with a double-digit victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. That win inspires optimism for Kyle Shanahan's team in the future but, in advance of San Francisco's Week 2 match-up with the Cincinnati Bengals, the head coach indicated that the 49ers will be short-handed at the running back position.

Projected starter Tevin Coleman left the opener at halftime after generating 56 yards on eight touches and, on Monday, Shanahan shed a bit of light in speaking to the media.

"[I'm] pretty sure he's not going to be around this week and we'll take it week to week after that," Shanahan indicated. "I don't think IR is a possibility right now so I think we'll ride it out."

The 49ers are calling the injury a high ankle sprain and, as such, Coleman is projected to miss multiple games. San Francisco takes on the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns, both at home, in the two weeks following this game against Cincinnati and, if nothing else, Coleman avoiding the IR is a relatively positive sign.

In his stead, the 49ers will use a formula that includes Matt Breida and Raheem Mostert at the running back spot. Breida is the more established runner but the veteran has battled his own injury problems throughout his tenure in San Francisco, and Mostert is better known for his work on special teams than as a ball-carrier out of the backfield.

San Francisco projects as 1-point underdogs on the road in Cincinnati this week, just days after the Bengals proved feisty in a narrow loss to the Seattle Seahawks. The 49ers are 40-1 to win the Super Bowl
