Giants vs. Chargers NFL injury report, odds: Mike Williams, Chris Harris join Keenan Allen on COVID list for Los Angeles, spread drops

The Chargers will be down at least one of their top receivers Sunday.

Sunday's New York Giants at Los Angeles Chargers game looked like one of the big mismatches of the week because New York will either be starting journeyman Mike Glennon or inexperienced Jake Fromm at quarterback. However, things have started stacking against the Chargers, too, with Mike Williams joining fellow starting receiver Keenan Allen and top cornerback Chris Harris Jr. on the COVID list today. Los Angeles is currently -10.5 at Caesars Sportsbook because a bad quarterback still trumps two good receivers – although I am now seeing books down to -10 with this news.

If Daniel Jones was healthy for the Giants, this might get all the way down to Chargers -6.5, but the spread may not get to single digits because of Glennon/Fromm with Fromm never having thrown an NFL regular-season pass.

Allen was placed on the COVID list Monday, but he reportedly is vaccinated and thus could still play – it's pretty unusual for players put on a COVID list to play that same week, but Steelers linebacker TJ Watt managed to do so last week. Allen will need two negative tests 24 hours apart and to be asymptomatic for 48 hours before he can return. He leads the Chargers with 86 receptions and 929 receiving yards and has four touchdown receptions.

Williams reportedly is not vaccinated so he wouldn't be able to play this week regardless and also would miss next Thursday's potentially huge AFC West game vs. Kansas City. Williams has 55 catches for 854 yards and seven TDs. Update: Reports are that Williams was a close contact of Allen's and Williams might be cleared in time for Sunday if he tests negative.

Jalen Guyton (18-289-1) and Joshua Palmer (15-168-1) would be the next men up for the Bolts as Justin Herbert's top receivers, although pass-catching running back Austin Ekeler may now be targeted 20 times as a receiver.

Harris isn't the four-time Pro Bowler he used to be with Denver but still a good player. In nine games this season, he has 26 tackles, two passes defensed and a pick – that interception came last week in the Chargers end zone vs. the Bengals which essentially sealed the game. Defensive tackle Linval Joseph remains in league protocols.
