Dolphins vs. Jets odds, spread, pick: Tua Tagovailoa remains Miami's starting QB; will Sam Darnold return for Jets?

Even though Miami rookie QB Tua Tagovailoa was pulled from Sunday's loss in Denver, he will remain the team's starter.

Miami Dolphins coach Brian Flores has reaffirmed that rookie Tua Tagovailoa is the team's starting quarterback even though Flores might have dented the No. 5 overall pick's confidence a bit by pulling Tua in Sunday's 20-13 upset loss in Denver. Miami visits the winless New York Jets on Sunday in Week 12 and opened as a 6.5-point favorite on the William Hill Sportsbook NFL odds. It's the first time Miami is that big of a road favorite since 2014.

Tagovailoa was 11-for-20 for only 83 yards with a touchdown pass against the Broncos. He also was sacked six times. Miami punted six times and scored only 10 points on his eight drives. Tua, who had one interception overturned by a defensive penalty, had begun his career 3-0 as a starter. Any chance Tua had of winning NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year probably vanished Sunday; with Joe Burrow done for the year, Justin Herbert is a massive favorite now.

Ryan Fitzpatrick wasn't all that much better in relief in the fourth quarter Sunday, going 12-for-18 for 117 yards with a pick that clinched the win for the Broncos.

"Tua wasn't injured. We just felt like it was the best move at that point of the game. We had to get in two-minute mode, and we felt like [Fitzpatrick] gave us the best chance to win the game, and we had an opportunity at the end to tie it," Flores said. "But (Tua is) healthy. He's a confident kid. He's fine."

Fitzpatrick is 3-3 as the team's starter this season and his last start came against the Jets in Week 6, a 24-0 Miami win. He threw three TD passes that day but also was picked off twice; Flores surprised many by then naming Tua the team's starter going into the bye. He made his NFL debut late vs. the Jets, completing both passes for nine yards.

It's not yet clear if the Jets will have Sam Darnold back under center this week. With Joe Flacco starting again for an injured Darnold, the Jets were 34-28 losers Sunday at the Chargers. It was the Jets' 15th straight loss in games they didn't start their No. 1 quarterback. That dates to November 2016, well before Darnold was even drafted.

New York also was officially eliminated from 2020 playoff contention with that Chargers defeat. It's earliest in a season the Jets have been eliminated since 1990.

There's a decent chance Darnold will be back this week, though. He's been dealing with a shoulder issue. The Jets need to showcase Darnold a bit because it seems likely they will try and trade him this offseason if they earn the top overall pick in the draft and take Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence.
