DeAndre Hopkins next NFL team odds: Chiefs, Bills, Cowboys favorites to sign released Cardinals Pro Bowl receiver
Want a hint on whether the Arizona Cardinals think they can compete for a Super Bowl in the 2023 NFL season? They just released the still very capable five-time All-Pro wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins and will absorb a dead salary cap hit of $22.6 million this year. The Cardinals apparently could not find trade partner for Hopkins, who will be 30 next month. SportsLine offers odds on where Hopkins might sign.
Earlier this week speaking on a podcast, Hopkins said what he's looking for: "What I want is stable management upstairs, that's something I haven't really had the past couple years of my career coming from Houston and then to Arizona. A QB who loves the game, a QB who brings everybody on board with him, not just himself but everybody around him ... and a great defense. A great defense wins championships."
Even though Hopkins has been limited to 19 games the past two seasons due to injury and suspension and probably isn't a top-flight wideout any longer, there will be a robust market now that it only costs money to land Hopkins and not draft capital or a player in a trade. He led Arizona with 717 receiving yards despite playing just nine games last season.
If Hopkins wants to win his first championship, there's no better place to go than Kansas City, which is a +600 favorite at Caesars Sportsbook to win Super Bowl 58 in Las Vegas. What receiver wouldn't want to play with Patrick Mahomes? The Chiefs lost JuJu Smith-Schuster in free agency.
Hopkins loves Buffalo's Josh Allen and the Bills are in win-now mode; star wideout Stefon Diggs isn't very happy as it is. Bills pass-rusher Von Miller has previously said that Hopkins wanted to play in Buffalo.
The Dallas Cowboys flirted with Odell Beckham Jr. but opted to trade for Brandin Cooks. Does that take them out of the market for Hopkins? He has spent a lot of this offseason training in the Dallas area.
Last season when the Patriots were preparing to face the Cardinals, Patriots coach Bill Belichick was downright effusive in his praise for Hopkins. He compared Hopkins to a Hall of Famer and said he's one of the best wide receivers he's ever coached against. Belichick added that he was glad the Patriots "only have to play (him) every four years."
So there may be interest on New England's side, but does Mac Jones fit the criteria Hopkins laid out? And what does Hopkins think about a reunion with new Pats offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien?
