Browns vs. Jaguars pick, odds, lines: Spread rising as tanking Jacksonville turns to Mike Glennon at quarterback

The Jacksonville Jaguars may have given up on the 2020 season with the news they will start journeyman Mike Glennon at QB on Sunday vs. Cleveland.

The "Tanking for Trevor Lawrence" race really heats up Sunday as the one-win Jacksonville Jaguars look to keep the pressure on the winless New York Jets as Jacksonville will start journeyman Mike Glennon at quarterback vs. the visiting Browns. Cleveland had been a 6-point favorite on the William Hill Sportsbook NFL odds, but that spread already is on the rise and seems likely to get above 7 even though the Browns will be without their two best defensive players.

Embattled Jaguars coach Doug Marrone, who is a lock to be fired after the season (if not sooner), announced Glennon as his guy Wednesday. Rookie sixth-round pick Jake Luton had started the past three games and essentially had gotten worse each time out. That culminated in a four-interception effort in last Sunday's 27-3 loss to Pittsburgh.

Jacksonville has lost nine straight games, tying a single-season franchise record. Gardner Minshew II, who had started the first seven games and is responsible for the Jags' only win, still isn't ready to go off a shoulder injury.

Glennon is 6-16 in his NFL career as a starter straight up, and in games where the 30-year-old has attempted at least one pass, his teams (Bucs, Bears, Cardinals and Raiders) are 10-18 against the spread, losing by an average score of 29.7-18.3.

Sunday will be Glennon's Jaguars debut and his first start since Week 4 of the 2017 season with Chicago. Glennon has completed 488 of 801 passes career (60.9 percent) for 5,163 yards, 36 touchdowns and 20 picks for a rating of 84.3. He hasn't faced the Browns since 2014 while with Tampa Bay.

On the bright side, Glennon will face a Browns defense missing end Myles Garrett (COVID-19 list) and cornerback Denzel Ward (injury), both of whom were having Pro Bowl-caliber seasons. Garrett is tied for the NFL lead with 9.5 sacks. We are still on the Browns here before it gets to -7.

There is a bit of Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon going on here. Glennon was replaced early in the 2017 season as Chicago's starter by Mitchell Trubisky … who was replaced earlier this season as Bears starter by Nick Foles … who was benched last year in Jacksonville for Minshew … who was benched for Luton … who is being benched for Glennon.

As things stand, the Jaguars would have the No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft and likely would take Ohio State's Justin Fields presuming the Jets take Trevor Lawrence No. 1.
