49ers vs. Giants Week 3 Vegas spread: Niners solid betting favorites on NFL odds despite missing multiple key starters

The San Francisco 49ers could be severely short-handed for Sunday's game at the Giants yet are still solid favorites.

How bad are the New York Giants this season? The NFL oddsmakers at William Hill sportsbook have essentially answered that question by listing Big Blue as a 4.5-point home underdog for Sunday's Week 3 matchup against the San Francisco 49ers, who could be without at least five of their most important players – including quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo -- due to injury yet are still road favorites.

San Francisco will play its second straight game at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey – the team opted to head to West Virginia this week to practice instead of flying back across the country – after crushing the terrible New York Jets 31-13 last Sunday. However, the win was extremely costly.

End Nick Bosa was the 2019 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year and entered this year as a +900 second-favorite at William Hill sportsbook to win Defensive Player of the Year, but his season is over after suffering a torn ACL vs. the Jets. No. 1 running back Raheem Mostert had an 80-yard touchdown scamper on the first play of the game but ended up leaving with a mild UCL sprain that is expected to keep him out at least this week.

Garoppolo didn't play in the second half vs. the Jets and is being called week-to-week with a high ankle sprain. The timeline for a typical high ankle sprain is usually between 4-6 weeks but it depends on the severity. Nick Mullens would start if Jimmy G can't.

"We'll see how that goes this week," Coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday of Garoppolo's injury. "(He) does still have a chance because the severity is not real bad, but it is a high ankle."

As it was, the Niners played Week 2 without Pro Bowl tight end George Kittle, top receiver Deebo Samuel, pass-rusher Dee Ford and cornerback Richard Sherman. Samuel and Sherman are on injured reserve so they won't play this week. Ford likely won't.

Kittle might go, but Shanahan added the team would take into account the questionable turf at MetLife Stadium on allowing Kittle to do so. Presumably, that goes for Garoppolo as well. The 49ers were very critical of that turf following Sunday's game. The NFL Players Association endorsed a thorough investigation and NFL field operations department will conduct one.

Meanwhile, Niners defensive tackle and former No. 3 overall pick Solomon Thomas also suffered a season-ending torn ACL in the loss, and No. 2 running back Tevin Coleman is out multiple weeks with a less serious knee injury.

The winless Giants weren't immune to the incredible number of injuries around the league in Week 2 as their best offensive player, running back Saquon Barkley, was lost to a season-ending ACL injury in a defeat at Chicago.
