The 2022 NFL preseason kicks off tonight from Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio as the Las Vegas Raiders "host" the Jacksonville Jaguars in the annual Hall of Fame Game – both teams will be debuting new head coaches and most surely sitting the vast majority of their starters. The Raiders are 2.5-point favorites at Caesars Sportsbook with a miniscule total of 30.5. That will probably be the lowest total of the exhibition season.
The league now schedules teams in the game that will have players being enshrined into the Hall of Fame later in the weekend. The Raiders' Cliff Branch (posthumously) and defensive lineman Richard Seymour will be enshrined Saturday, as will Jaguars offensive lineman Tony Boselli. The Raiders are 3-0 all-time in this game, last playing in 2006. The Jaguars are 0-1.
Because both teams have an additional exhibition game, very few if any starters will play on both sides. We already know the Jaguars will not play No. 1 quarterback Trevor Lawrence or backup CJ Beathard. Jake Luton will start. Kyle Sloter should play plenty behind him.
It would be shocking if Derek Carr and new addition receiver Davante Adams see the field for Las Vegas; the other QBs on the roster are Jarrett Stidham, Nick Mullens and Chase Garbers. Carr has a total of nine passing attempts over the last three preseasons and didn't see the field at all in three contests last year, but that was under Jon Gruden.
"Oh no, I don't care (if I play)," Carr said this week. "For me it doesn't matter. I've played in them; I haven't played in them. Either way we'll be ready."
Former Eagles Super Bowl-winning coach Doug Pederson makes his Jaguars coaching debut and he was 8-8 in the preseason with Philly and 1-3 in openers. Former Broncos head coach and Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels makes his Raiders coaching debut. He was 2-6 in the preseason with Denver and 0-2 in openers. More recently, New England has gone 9-2 SU and 8-3 ATS in the past three preseasons while McDaniels was running the offense. He grew up in Canton and played in this stadium for the McKinley High School football team.
Since 2005, favorites are 11-4 straight up in this game and 7-5-3 against the spread. Last year, the Steelers upset the Cowboys 16-3, snapping a string of four straight wins by favorites. The Under is 9-6 since 2005; there hasn't been even 40 total points scored in this game since 2013 – although two have been canceled in that span: 2016 due to field conditions and 2020 because of COVID.
Teams don't like showing much of anything in the preseason regardless and especially to future opponents: Las Vegas visits Jacksonville in Week 9.
