Ravens have looked like a changed football team over the last few weeks, and a lot of that has to do with Lamar Jackson. It also has to do with playing four of the worst defensive teams in the league this season, including a couple that can barely sustain drives on the other end of the field. The Chargers have seen their share of struggles recently with Melvin Gordon and others sidelined, but they've still won those football games, including a win over the Chiefs lasts week. San Diego is back home with Gordon on the field and a defense that will give Baltimore struggles it has not yet had to face with Jackson at the helm. If the Chargers can keep Patrick Mahomes somewhat in check, they can handle Jackson just fine.
In this Saturday Spotlight game, the focus will be on whether or not the Chargers defense can slow down Lamar Jackson and the Ravens run game. Truth be told, it's not necessarily about slowing down the Ravens offense, it's about whether or not the Chargers offense can have consistent success against one of the best per-play-defenses in the NFL. Not too many are having that conversation. That'll be what decides this game.
I don't think there will be too much of a Chargers letdown from their huge win last week at Kansas City. But with the Chargers being at home, I think they're getting too much credit in the price. There is no home edge in Carson, Calif., and it seems every game there is close except for when Arizona played there five weeks ago. I like the Ravens' defense to slow down Philip Rivers and I like Lamar Jackson to be effective running the ball and chewing up clock. Take the Ravens to cover.
This line has come down, giving us value on the Chargers. After facing five of the six worst defenses in the NFL, Lamar Jackson faces a Top-10 defense on a short week. The Chargers can smell the AFC's No. 1 seed, they had extra time to prepare for Baltimore's new-look offense, and they've got Melvin Gordon coming back. No letdown here, lay it.
This could be a bit of a letdown spot for the Chargers after the big win over the Chiefs, but I like them getting three extra days of rest for a Saturday game. This is also a tough cross-country road trip for the Ravens, who will be facing their first non-awful rushing defense since instilling Lamar Jackson as the starting quarterback. If the Chargers are the first team to force him to win with his arm, it could get ugly for the visitors. Baltimore also represents a tough defensive challenge for the Chargers, but with them going on the road, I think the home team will find enough points to cover.
Lamar Jackson give sthe Ravens a whole new dimension. They can keep the ball and control the clock. Their defense is No. 1 in total yards and points allowed. The Chargers are getting Melvin Gordon back, but they don't have a homefield advantage. Take the points.
Ravens QB Lamar Jackson has put veteran Joe Flacco in the past tense. A cautious offensive game plan to protect the rookie has resulted in a 4-1 record straight-up. His sixth start presents fresh challenges. Baltimore must go cross-country in a short week while Los Angeles luxuriates in a “long” week, having played last Thursday. The L.A. defense is far better than anything Jackson has faced. And Chargers RB Melvin Gordon (knee) expects to return after a three-week hiatus.
