If the Giants aren't tanking, then what exactly are they doing? There's certainly not addition by subtraction with the moves New York has made as of late, and I can only imagine it has turned off guys like Odell Beckham Jr. even further. Eli Manning is not mobile enough to handle Washington's defensive front, and Alex Smith should have little problem finding holes in the secondary. The Redskins should be a field goal favorite on the road, and I'd have them covering that spread, too. It is a bit concerning to me that this line hasn't changed much despite 65 percent of the public riding with Washington, but that's not going to make me change my pick.
My mind is wired to buy on bad news, but sometimes you just have to recognize a tire fire when you see one. Giants management has sent a clear and unmistakable signal to the team that they've given up on the season. This week they're trading away every defensive starer with a pulse. Last week the owner was calling out Odell Beckham, and this was a few weeks after Beckham and Lil' Wayne threw Eli Manning under the bus in a televised interview. Does this seem like a team you want to bet on?
The Redskins' defensive line will be the difference, as Washington should add significantly to the 24 sacks already surrendered by the Giants. Back Washington as the G-Men fall to 3-9 ATS in their last 12 home games.
New York is house-cleaning. In the wake of their Monday night loss in Atlanta, the Giants unloaded corner Eli Apple and defensive tackle Damon Harrison, each for draft picks that offer no immediate help. On offense, they seem resigned to Eli Manning at QB, even with only one TD pass per game this year and two dozen sacks, second-most in the NFL. The backups are not ready for prime time — or any other time. New York, with one win, keeps flirting with a second but is not likely to secure another after a short week against the Skins, who are poised to pounce on a division rival that has troubled them lately.
For the second consecutive week, the Redskins tangle with a divisional foe -- this time the Giants. My simulations indicate the line for this match, in which Washington is laying 1, is way off. In nearly two-thirds of the projections, the 'Skins cover the spread a whopping 65 percent of the time by an average scoring margin of eight points. Yet another week in which the Giants offense sputters -- Monday night they couldn't muster much against a porous Falcons defense. Look for a big game from Alex Smith. Back the Redskins in the Meadowlands.
