The Patrick Mahomes era has started with a bang. Mahomes has so many talented offensive players around him it will take at least 3-4 more weeks before teams start to figure out how to corral this offense. I'm sure being as physical as possible with their smallish playmakers will slow them down in weeks to come but San Francisco is not the team to be physical. Mahomes throws four more touchdowns and yes the defensive numbers are poor for Kansas City but it's been in prevent defense for the better part of two quarters versus their first two foes.
An area bettors go wrong all the time is chasing a downfall instead of riding it. Kansas City’s defense is showing no signs of improving and their offense is showing no signs of slowing down. They’ll face a San Francisco team that is still not near their ceiling offensively. This has another fast-paced, points-galore game written all over it. Yet the oddsmakers have this line precise and will win the Under based on special teams miscues and an ill-advised turnover. Grab the under.
The Chiefs might have the best offense in the league to start the season. The Chiefs might have the worst defense in the league to start the season. Kansas City has scored 80 points and still has a NEGATIVE 9.6 net yards per drive this season. This defense is miserable. Opposing defenses now have two weeks of game film on Mahomes. Kyle Shanahan and Jimmy G will have enough to get the cover and possibly win outright on the road in Kansas City.
I'm a big fan of the Chiefs' offense, but their defense has given up a ton of points, particularly in the second half. That's good news for the 49ers, who have a quarterback in Jimmy Garoppolo who can get some garbage-time touchdowns if needed and help us cover this line. The 49ers defense is getting whole, with linebackers Reuben Foster and Malcolm Smith back for this game. I like Kyle Shanahan to come up with more than enough to hang a big number here and get us a cover.
This massive total sticks out like a sore thumb on the betting board, but it might not be high enough. New QB Patrick Mahomes is in the middle of an epic groove and I don't see the 49ers stopping him any better than the Chiefs or Steelers did. The main reason this game gets Over is because of the Chiefs defense allowing 32.5 ppg and 508 ypg. Jimmy Garoppolo will have some fun in the Chiefs' home opener. Over is the play.
This is the week in which Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes floats back to earth -- or at least below the cloud line. Ten TD passes and no interceptions, with road wins over Super Bowl contenders Los Angeles (Chargers version) and Pittsburgh, is otherworldly. Still, totals this high should be reserved for games involving dreadful defenses, and these two are respectable. Nine sacks suffered by 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo is stunting the Niners’ offense. The rise from 52.5 points enhances value on the Under in Sunday's game.
