Bryce Petty went 2 for 9 in relief last week, and now he faces an angry Saints team coming off a stinging loss with extra rest. Lay the monster number.
The last time New Orleans was this big of a favorite was ... never. Bottom line is, you take the points in this scenario against any team not named New England. (And maybe even the Patriots.) There is concern about reserve Jets QB Bryce Petty having only four career starts. And with the weekly drama on whether RB Matt Forte (knee) will be available. And with a surprisingly quick recovery by Saints RB Alvin Kamara (concussion). But the Saints’ defense ranks 19th against the rush, upon which New York will rely. Ten New Orleans players left the field last week in Atlanta with injuries. Finally, the unappreciated-by-bettors Jets are on a 7-3-1 roll ATS.
The Saints, and primarily coach Sean Payton, let one slip away in Atlanta last week. The defeat puts them in “continuous-win mode” down the stretch. They face a Jets team that has lost its starting QB Josh McCown, who was playing well, for the season. This is the ultimate get-well game for New Orleans -- lay the points.
No way should a game featuring Bryce Petty at quarterback have this many points on the total. The Saints have a quality defense that ranks 11th in points allowed this season, so don't expect much scoring from the Jets, if any at all. They just came out of a game where they only managed six first downs. The Saints' offense should take the foot off the gas in the second half, but even if they score into the 30s I think the Under has a great chance of cashing.
Even laying two TDs with a hook, this feels like we're getting value. The Saints are one of the best teams in the league, and they may be the most likely team to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl with Carson Wentz now out. The Jets will start Bryce Petty in this game, and he's been pretty awful in his career thus far. Josh McCown was giving the Jets a chance to compete, but they should fall apart after his injury. The Saints, coming off a mini-bye after playing Thursday, will take care of business here and win going away.
