A lot of smart people have been done in picking the Chargers since the start of 2016, as they’re a team that seems far less than the sum of its parts. But even though their home-field advantage is non-existent, I like them in this spot. The Eagles have to travel cross-country after an emotional win over a divisional rival in Week 3, and they could easily come out flat. With no Fletcher Cox this week in addition to their secondary injuries, the Eagles defense might not be able to slow down the Chargers’ attack as long as Philip Rivers doesn’t try to do too much.
Early this week I posted a video stating the Eagles would send the Chargers to 0-4. But after monitoring the injury reports and digging deeper, I'm backing L.A. There's a reason this line has flipped 2.5 points since the open. Philly will be without Darren Sproles, Fletcher Cox and several members of the secondary. The Chargers are basically healthy, with Melvin Gordon expected to be a full-go. Lay the small number as the underachieving Chargers finally get a win.
I hate to ride the wave of Chargers backers who have flipped the spread from Philadelphia -1. Yet, this is another instance of a respectable winless team in desperation mode. The L.A. offense is better than its 16-points-per-game pace hints and should get cranked up, especially with elite DT Fletcher Cox (calf) scratched. RB Darren Sproles (arm, ACL) was essential to the Eagles’ offense as a receiver out of the backfield. His absence limits QB Carson Wentz’s options.
