Golden State Warriors 2019-20 NBA betting postmortem and lookahead

The Golden State Warriors had the worst record in the 2019-20 NBA regular season but weren't that bad betting-wise.

It's looking more and more likely that the 2019-20 NBA regular season is over in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic ā€“ it was supposed to conclude on April 15. On Tuesday, Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr admitted his team was operating as if its season was done. The Dubs had a league-worst 15-50 record when the season was suspended on March 11.

"Our coaching staff and I have been undergoing staff evaluations, offseason plans, so we are absolutely in offseason mode right now," Kerr said during a video conference call in conjunction with the University of San Francisco. "We're staying in touch with guys, but everyone is just sort of assuming that this is kind of it."

So, while there's still a realistic chance the NBA stages a postseason in some form, Kerr is probably right about his team and all the others that were outside the playoff field. Let's recap Golden State's season overall.

    • 2019-20 ATS record: 31-34 (19th-best in NBA)
    • Average ATS margin: -1.3
    • ATS home record: 14-20 (seventh-worst)
    • ATS road record: 17-14 (ninth-best)
    • ATS as favorite: 1-3 (fewest games as favorite in NBA)
    • ATS as underdog: 30-31 (13th-worst)
    • Over-Under record: 30-35 (third-fewest Over games)
    • Over-Under at home: 16-18 (ninth-fewest Over games)
    • Over-Under on road: 14-17 (sixth-fewest Over games)

The biggest spread against the Warriors last season was 16 points four times. They covered in three of those and beat the Nuggets 116-100 in Denver at +16 on March 3.

With the NBA's worst record, Golden State will have a 14 percent chance of winning the 2020 draft lottery, same as the Cleveland Cavaliers and Minnesota Timberwolves.

Of course, the Warriors played the entire season without Klay Thompson as he rehabbed a torn ACL and the vast majority of it without Stephen Curry due to a broken hand. The team also made a big trade in shipping out D'Angelo Russell to Minnesota for Andrew Wiggins.

The Dubs have no major free agents this offseason and could be poised for a return to power in the 2020-21 campaign with the return of Thompson to go with Curry, Wiggins and Draymond Green ā€“ plus potentially the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft.

Golden State could use that on someone like Anthony Edwards (the current betting favorite to go first), James Wiseman, LaMelo Ball or Deni Avdija, or trade it for a younger star-level player. Ric Bucher of Bleacher Report reported recently that Memphis' Wiseman is atop Golden State's draft board, and center is the team's biggest need.
