The line has jumped a ton from Nets -3 to Nets -7.5. That’s a big move! I’m not buying that this Brooklyn team will ever mesh. They obviously have a ton of talent on paper, but it will take time for every player not named Kevin Durant or Kyrie Irving to figure out his role. Opening night, lots of points - I'll take the underdog.
While most of the attention for this game is on it being Kevin Durant's Brooklyn debut against his former team, his former team will not look like his former team. The Warriors will basically be Stephen Curry and some guys. Draymond Green is out tonight and Klay Thompson is out for the season. Unless Curry goes supernova it's hard to imagine the Warriors keeping this close. And even if he does, the Nets could still cover.
The Warriors are in trouble offensively without Klay Thompson. They are going to need Steph Curry to be among the league leaders - if not first - in scoring to be successful. Kelly Oubre Jr. will help, but Andrew Wiggins is too inconsistent. Also, Draymond Green is out for this game, which is a big blow because his excellent passing abilities help facilitate their offense. Kevin Durant is no slouch defensively for the Nets and they can clog the paint with DeAndre Jordan and Jarrett Allen.
Favorites have historically been a bad bet on opening night. And the Nets face massive expectations this season, starting with an inflated line Tuesday. Grab the points with Steph Curry and the Warriors.
While the Warriors may be without Draymond Green (and of course Klay Thompson) due to a muscle strain, this spread feels a bit high. I'm excited to see rookie No. 2 overall pick James Wiseman, who should be a defensive force right away. Steph Curry already looks in midseason form with back-to-back 29-point games in the preseason. There could be a bit of a learning curve for the Nets as they incorporate Kevin Durant into the lineup (his minutes likely limited a bit the first few games) and Steve Nash learns how to be a head coach on the fly. The Warriors have won four of the last five against the Nets in Brooklyn.
