Yankees vs. Mets Wednesday MLB probable pitchers, odds: Facing Max Scherzer on his birthday, Yanks their biggest underdogs of season

The Yankees are sizable underdogs tonight against Mets ace Max Scherzer.

The first game of the 2022 Subway Series was highly entertaining Tuesday as the Mets upset the Yankees 6-3 in an atmosphere at Citi Field that sure felt like a World Series game. While the starting pitching matchup was even in the first game, it looks quite lopsided tonight with three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer on the hill for the Mets against Domingo German of the Yankees, who are facing their longest odds of the season at +158 per Caesars Sportsbook.

It's the eighth time in 2022 that the Yankees are dogs and all eight instances have come on the road. They are 4-3 in the previous seven and most recently were underdogs in both games of a doubleheader last Thursday in Houston. The Astros swept the twin-bill. The biggest number facing New York this year had been +135 in Toronto on June 18, and the Yankees knocked off the Blue Jays and Cy Young contender Alek Manoah. The last time the Yankees were at least +155 was Aug. 15, 2021, at the White Sox. They won that game 5-3. New York is 7-3 in its past 10 games priced at least +155.

It will be the first-ever Subway Series game for Scherzer. Scherzer is 6-2 with a 2.28 ERA and 98 strikeouts in 75 innings this season, allowing just 54 hits and 13 walks for a WHIP of 0.89. In four starts since returning from an oblique strain that sidelined him for almost two months, Scherzer is 1-1 with a 1.78 ERA, 39 strikeouts and two walks in 25.1 innings.

Scherzer is 4-4 with a 3.93 ERA lifetime in nine starts against the Yankees. It's also Scherzer's 38th birthday.

"The situations he's been through, he will not be fazed by [the Subway Series], and he could be telling the next batter to, 'Get in the effing box' or something like that," the Mets' JD Davis said. "We are going to get the tenacity of Scherzer, so I don't think he's going to be fazed by it at all."

Mets closer Edwin Diaz, having a fantastic season with a 1.55 ERA and 22 saves, may not be available as he pitched for the third time in four games Tuesday. He struck out four in 1.1 innings to earn the save.

The Yankees, as noted above, will start German (0-1, 15.00). He made his first start of the season last Thursday in Houston after opening the year on the IL, and was knocked around for five runs and six hits (two homers) in three innings.
