Twins vs. Athletics Tuesday MLB injury report, odds, pick: Byron Buxton, Carlos Correa not in Minnesota's lineup

The Twins are without two key hitters in Oakland on Tuesday.

The Minnesota Twins were hoping to have shortstop Carlos Correa and outfielder Trevor Larnach off the injured list and back in the lineup tonight in Oakland, but neither apparently has been activated because they aren't starting. Neither is MVP candidate/outfielder Byron Buxton, who is simply getting a night off against the A's. The Twins are still -125 favorites at Caesars Sportsbook. (See tickets at StubHub)

MLB.com originally reported that Correa (.255, two HRs, 11 RBIs) was going to return from his bruised right middle finger, but that will now have to wait at least one more day. Manager Rocco Baldelli said today that Correa is "very close to returning," adding, "I think we could see him out here this series." The series ends Wednesday.

Larnach was off to a fine start for the Twins with a .313 average, .813 OPS and a WAR of 1.3 in 22 games before going down with a groin injury. He was eligible for activation but, again, apparently will not be available tonight because the starting lineup has been released and those usually aren't out this early (9:40 ET first pitch) when a team is planning to make roster moves.

Minnesota was a 3-1 winner in the series opener Monday, with Buxton knocking in the eventual game-winning run in the fifth inning. He leads the team and is second in the majors with 11 homers, but the Twins are going to play it cautious with their injury-prone star, meaning he likely gets at least one game off a week for the time being. Third baseman Gio Urshela (.223, three HRs, 10 RBIs) also is sitting tonight.

As for Bundy, (3-2, 5.76 ERA), he missed 10 games after going on the COVID-19 list May 6 but has been activated and will start on the mound. The right-hander was terrific in his first three starts this year, but allowed 15 runs on 22 hits over 9.2 innings in his past two before landing on the COVID list.

Minnesota has lost nine consecutive series in Oakland but would snap that with a win tonight. The Twins are 7-23 at the Oakland Coliseum dating to the start of 2012.

Oakland, on a three-game skid in which it has scored one run in each, starts James Kaprielian (0-2, 4.97 ERA). He has yielded three runs in 10.2 innings over his last two outings (2.53 ERA). Opponents are batting .196 off him this year (9-for-46).
