The biggest favorites on the William Hill Sportsbook MLB board Wednesday are the San Diego Padres at -300 vs. the visiting Colorado Rockies. That moneyline recently jumped a bit with the news the Friars are activating star shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. and first baseman Eric Hosmer off the COVID-19 injured list and both are in the lineup for the matinee. It's Chi Chi Gonzalez on the bump for Colorado and Joe Musgrove for San Diego.
Tatis Jr. did test positive for the virus but is a full 10 days removed from his last positive test and was asymptomatic the entire time, so he has cleared the protocols. A handful of close contacts followed him to the COVID list, of which Hosmer was one.
Interestingly, the Padres are hitting Tatis Jr. at cleanup Wednesday for the first time in his career. The NL MVP candidate was off to a so-so start, also dealing with a shoulder injury, batting .240 with nine homers and 14 RBIs in 26 games. The homers still lead the team. Hosmer is batting .305 with four homers and 21 RBIs in 35 games. He is batting fifth. Outfielder Wil Myers, who also tested positive for COVID-19 last week, remains on the injured list.
Tatis is 0-for-4 career against the Rockies' Gonzalez (2-1, 4.79). He comes off easily his best outing of the season, seven shutout innings vs. Cincinnati. Previously, he hadn't gone more than five innings. This will be Gonzalez's fourth career start and fifth appearance vs. the Padres. He's 0-1 with a 7.34 ERA overall and 0-1 with a 9.64 ERA as starter.
The Rockies have gone 2-16 on the road this season and have lost their last six road games while averaging 2.2 runs per game and shut out three times.
Thus, it could be an easy night for the Padres' Musgrove (3-4, 2.86), who had a no-hitter earlier this season. He has lasted just five innings in each of his past three outings with a 1-2 record and 6.00 ERA. In two career starts vs. Colorado (none in 2021), he is 1-1 with a 2.77 ERA.
