Brewers vs. Padres Tuesday MLB injury report, odds: Hunter Renfroe, Josh Hader unavailable for Milwaukee

The Brewers won't have their closer or one of their top sluggers for at least Tuesday in San Diego.

It's a matchup of former Cy Young Award winners on Tuesday when the Brewers' Corbin Burnes faces off against the Padres' Blake Snell in San Diego. Milwaukee is a -135 favorite at Caesars Sportsbook even though it will be missing two important players in All-Star closer Josh Hader, probably the best in the business, and slugging outfielder Hunter Renfroe. Hader stepped away from the team before Monday's game – a 3-2 Brewers loss in 10 innings – as his wife has had complications with her pregnancy. Rules allow Hader to be away from the club for 3-7 days, so he'll miss the rest of this series at a minimum.

Relievers don't win Cy Young Awards these days, but Hader should be in the conversation at a minimum. He has set an MLB record with saves in each of his first 15 games in a season, has converted 29 straight save opportunities dating to last season -- the longest active streak in the majors -- and has made 36 consecutive scoreless appearances, covering 34 innings. Batters are hitting .081 off him in that stretch (9-for-111) with 58 strikeouts. Devin Williams should close in his absence.

Hader is +5000 at Caesars to win the Cy Young with Burnes (1-2, 2.26 ERA) a +350 favorite to repeat. Opponents are hitting .190 off him, but Burnes isn't getting much run support. Burnes was 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA in two starts last season vs. the Padres. San Diego's Manny Machado, leading the majors with a .359 average, is 0-for-1 with a K career vs. Burnes.

Renfroe left Monday's game early with a hamstring injury and will have an MRI today to determine how long he will be sidelined. In his first season with the Brewers, Renfroe is batting .266 with nine homers and 19 RBIs. He entered Monday batting .424 with three homers and eight RBIs over his past nine games, including five multi-hit efforts.

Renfroe's absence could make things a bit easier for Snell (0-1, 7.36), who made his first start of the season off the injured list last Wednesday in Philadelphia and allowed three runs over 3.2 innings of the loss. Snell, the 2018 AL Cy Young winner with Tampa Bay, lost his lone 2021 start vs. Milwaukee, allowing five runs in 3.2 innings.
