Athletics vs. Tigers Tuesday MLB probable pitchers, odds: Oakland home team in Detroit for matinee Game 1 of doubleheader

The Detroit Tigers will be the road team in their own stadium for Game 1 of a doubleheader vs. Oakland on Tuesday.

If you happened to look at Tuesday's MLB slate and saw that today's doubleheader in Detroit between the Tigers and A's features Oakland as the home team in the opening game, it's not a misprint. Because the lockout pushed back the start of the season by about a week, there will be some creative scheduling at times this year to accommodate all 162 regular-season games. So, Oakland will bat second for Game 1 Tuesday afternoon. Detroit is a -114 favorite at Caesars Sportsbook.

The lockout cost the Tigers seven games; four in Seattle (March 31-April 3) and three in Oakland (April 4-6). Now Detroit will play just two games in Oakland - both immediately after the All-Star break on July 21 in another doubleheader.

Future Tigers Hall-of-Famer Miguel Cabrera could move up a few all-time lists on Tuesday (although at age 39, he may not play in both games). He sits at 3,009 career hits and would tie Wade Boggs for 30th with his next one. Cabrera is at 503 homers, one shy of Eddie Murray for 27th. He's tied with George Brett with 1,120 extra-base hits and up next at No. 17 on the list is Manny Ramirez with 1,122. Finally, Cabrera's next double will tie Barry Bonds for 17th with 601.

Cabrera is 2-for-4 with two doubles against scheduled Oakland Game 1 starter Frankie Montas (2-2, 3.44). Montas was terrific last time out, throwing seven shutout innings against the Rays. Yet he was forced to take a no-decision, as the impotent A's offense failed to provide run support. Oakland has scored just 98 runs so far this season and is batting .200 as a team. Montas is 4-2 with a 5.01 ERA in seven career appearances, including six starts, against Detroit.

The A's won Monday's opener 2-0 to snap a nine-game skid, which was tied for the seventh-longest losing streak in franchise history. The A's had been outscored 45-24 during the streak. Their previous win was also a shutout; a 1-0 pitcher's duel against the Giants on April 27.

Lefty Tarik Skubal (1-2, 3.04) will take the mound for the Tigers. He had a strong outing in his most recent start, allowing two runs with nine strikeouts and no walks last Thursday in Houston. He too took a no-decision, as Detroit's lineup is just as weak as Oakland's. The Tigers have totaled just 78 runs, are hitting a combined .217, and have gone 24 straight innings without a runner crossing home plate.

Skubal is 0-2 with a 7.00 ERA in two career starts against the A's.
