2022 NL Cy Young Award Odds: Marlins' Sandy Alcantara now running away from field

Miami's Sandy Alcantara now is the clear-cut favorite for NL Cy Young.

No Marlins pitcher has won the National League Cy Young Award, but barring injury it appears that drought will end this year. Miami's Sandy Alcantara has pulled away from the field following a dominant outing Wednesday vs. Cincinnati. He is now the -210 favorite at Caesars Sportsbook with reigning Cy Young winner Corbin Burnes of Milwaukee a distant second at +800. A couple of weeks ago, those two were neck-and-neck.

Cy Young odds will be fluid for the remainder of the season. Burnes (8-5, 2.49 ERA) was not good Tuesday in a big upset loss in Pittsburgh, allowing four runs and walking a career-high five batters (three would eventually score) in 5.1 innings. The last time Burnes walked five batters was when he was a 22-year-old pitching in Double-A. Burnes might have been affected by the trade Monday of his best friend on the team in All-Star closer Josh Hader to San Diego.

"It's not just this outing, it's been all year," Burnes said. "[I'm] constantly searching to find something to keep consistent with and get in that good groove and get that good feeling. [I] just haven't done it yet."

What Burnes has going for him is that Milwaukee is in a playoff race and the Marlins aren't. Burnes is next scheduled to pitch Sunday at home vs. Cincinnati.

Against those same Reds on Wednesday in Miami, Alcantara (10-4, 1.88 ERA) threw a complete-game six-hit shutout as the Marlins snapped a nine-game home losing streak. It was Alcantara's third career shutout and MLB-leading third complete game this season. It was the fourth time Alcantara pitched at least nine innings in 2022. That is more than any other team in Major League Baseball.

The Dominican right-hander leads the majors in innings (158 1/3) and the NL in ERA (1.88). There are roughly two months left in the season yet Alcantara is already the first Marlins pitcher to reach double-digit victories in a season since Caleb Smith won 10 in 2019.

A price of -210 on the money line equates to Alcantara having a 67.7 percent chance of winning the Cy Young. The Marlins have a few days off upcoming (today and Monday) so he's not scheduled to pitch again until Wednesday in Philadelphia.
