The Yankees are 6-2 this season the day after they lose as a favorite. Anthony Rizzo is finally back in the lineup, giving much needed power to this offense. The Yankees are 42-10 when they hit at least two home runs, so getting Rizzo back is a major boost. Aaron Judge has a career batting average of .429 with three home runs against Robbie Ray. Nestor Cortes owns a 5-3 road record with a 3.02 ERA and will be looking for another quality road start. Over the last 10 games, the Mariners have a .201 batting averaging while being outscored by seven runs. Ray has been solid at home, 4-3 with a 2.80 ERA, but has a 3.59 ERA for day games. Play the Yankees.
I don't love this pick (in the "like" zone), but I want to play something this afternoon, and Anthony Rizzo is back in the lineup for the Yankees. We pretty much know what Nestor Cortes will do on the mound. Seattle's Robbie Ray has a higher ceiling than Cortes does but also a better chance of getting lit up (21 homers allowed). Still no Julio Rodriguez or Jesse Winker for the M's. JP Crawford and Cal Raleigh are getting the day off so the Yanks have the clear lineup edge. New York is 23-9 vs. lefties and Seattle 10-16.
These teams just went 13 innings Tuesday night and now it's a day game. That puts a lot of emphasis on the starting pitchers to get deep into the game and I trust Robbie Ray more than Nestor Cortes. Ray has been awful against the Astros but great against everyone else the last two months. He's also a workhorse who is reliable at getting through at least six innings. Cortes has a 3.81 ERA while averaging just over five innings per start in his last 10 outings. Plus, the Mariners' bullpen is deeper and less overworked right now.
