Yankees win vs. Rangers would result in MLB record five 100-victory teams; Aaron Judge not in lineup and Triple Crown unlikely

There would be a record five 100-win teams this season in MLB if the Yankees prevail in Texas.

The Major League Baseball record for 100-win teams in a season is four, which happened in 2019 when the New York Yankees, Cleveland, Houston and Los Angeles Dodgers all reached the century mark. Entering today's final day of the 2022 regular season there are also four, and if the New York Yankees win at the Texas Rangers (both are -110), we would have a record of five. Aaron Judge is not in the lineup after hitting his AL-record 62nd homer on Tuesday.

The Dodgers lead the majors with 110 wins, the Astros have 105, the Braves 101 and the Mets 100 -- the poor Mets have had one of their best-ever seasons and still have to play in the Wild Card series, starting Friday at home against the Padres.

The Yankees at one point in the first half were on pace to potentially break the MLB record of 116 wins, but they fell off big-time early in the second half. However, they have since won 16 of their last 22 games. Their 20-8 (.734) record since Sept. 4 is tied with Houston for the second-best in the majors, trailing only Cleveland (23-7, .767).

New York really has no reason to care today and is resting several regulars including Judge. On Tuesday in the first inning of Game 2 of a doubleheader vs. the Rangers, he went yard off Jesus Tinoco for No. 62. He is the fourth player in MLB history to hit at least 62, joining Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire (twice) and Sammy Sosa (four times). Judge will be the ninth Yankee (19th time/18th season) to lead the majors in homers.

It does appear Judge may come up short for the Triple Crown as while he has locked up the home run and RBI titles, he is batting .311, four points behind Minnesota's Luis Arraez – who is in the lineup today at the White Sox and clearly would have to go hitless for Judge to have any shot (would the Twins pull Arraez if he starts, say, 0-for-3?).

The Yankees start Domingo German (2-4, 3.31) vs. the Rangers' Glenn Otto (6-10, 4.72). Normally, the Bombers would be heavy favorites, but oddsmakers clearly expected a watered-down lineup.

There also could be four 100-loss teams this year, which would be just the fourth time it's happened in history, but the third consecutive full season. The Nationals have 106 losses, the A's 102 and Pirates 100. It all comes down to the 99-loss Reds, who are +110 home underdogs today against the Cubs. Never before have nine teams in one season reached triple digits in either wins or losses. The record is eight in 2019.
