Week 17 NHL power rankings: Rating all 32 teams with less than three months remaining in the 2024-25 season

Here's how the NHL looks from top to bottom with less three months to go in the regular season

A blockbuster three-team trade involving a pair of high-scoring forwards shook up the NHL world last Friday, and the Week 17 of the 2024-25 NHL season could be a big one for the Carolina Hurricanes and Colorado Avalanche. Carolina acquired Mikko Rantanen, who is sixth in the league in points (64) and seventh in goals (25), while Colorado obtained Martin Necas, who has registered 55 points and is on pace to shatter the career high of 71 he set in 2022-23.

The Hurricanes also obtained 2018 Hart Trophy winner Taylor Hall from the Chicago Blackhawks in the deal as they look to gain ground in the Washington Capitals for first place in the Metropolitan Division. Washington, meanwhile, is in a dogfight with the Winnipeg Jets for the Presidents' Trophy. The clubs enter the week even in points and on hot streaks, with both posting seven wins over their last 10 games.

New York has witnessed some impressive hockey of late, as both the Rangers and Islanders have been on fire. And just across the Hudson River, the New Jersey Devils appear to be coming out of their funk and hope to continue their surge with three games against weaker opponents this week.

While Washington and Winnipeg have solid leads in their respective divisions, the top two teams in both the Atlantic and Pacific are separated by a single point. The Toronto Maple Leafs and defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers are battling it out in the the Atlantic, while the Vegas Golden Knights and Edmonton Oilers are neck and neck in the Pacific.

Now, we'll jump into the power rankings as we begin Week 17 of the 2024-25 NHL season. These rankings are based on the current state of the 32 teams, with their overall performance in several categories also being factors.
