Seattle Seahawks first round pick DK Metcalf set to undergo knee surgery

There is now real uncertainty with Metcalf as the season approaches.

It was a surprise when talented wide receiver DK Metcalf slipped to the end of the second round in the 2019 NFL Draft and, if things work out, the Seattle Seahawks could benefit in a big way. However, Metcalf's rookie campaign may not start on time, with news breaking from head coach Pete Carroll on Sunday evening that the former Ole Miss standout will need knee surgery this week.

"DK's got an injury to his knee that we found after a couple days," Carroll told reporters on Sunday. "It happened a few days back. So there's something. We're gonna do some work on it Tuesday and get him back in a hurry. So we're disappointed for him because he was off to a fantastic start, but I don't think this is gonna derail him for long. But he does have to have some work done, and we'll know more about that when we get back into town."

Within the same media session, Carroll did express a positive viewpoint on the chances that Metcalf could return for the regular season opener, though there isn't a ton of clarity in terms of his recovery timeline. The Seahawks open the campaign with a Week 1 match-up against the Cincinnati Bengals and, if Metcalf isn't able to take the field at full strength, Seattle will be reliant on David Moore and/or Jaron Brown to complement the efforts of Tyler Lockett on the outside.

Despite Metcalf's status as a rookie, he is expected to take on a large role when healthy, particularly with Doug Baldwin not returning to Seattle after the 2018 season. The Seahawks face 30-1 odds to win the Super Bowl and, while Metcalf isn't necessarily a centerpiece of that effort, it will be interesting to see when he is able to return to the field to provide a potentially dynamic option for Russell Wilson in the passing game.
