Panthers quarterback Cam Newton avoids injury report for Week 1 against Rams

There are no injury concerns for Newton as the season begins.

When Cam Newton suffered a sprained left foot in the third preseason game for the Carolina Panthers, there seemed to be real doubt that the former MVP would be able to suit up for his team in Week 1 against the Los Angeles Rams. In advance of kick-off, however, that doubt has been erased and, in addition to Newton's full removal from the injury report, the team is saying there are no limitations on his deployment in the opener.

"No reason to," head coach Ron Rivera told ESPN of the lack of limitations. "He's in great shape. He's right where we need him to be. He's thrown the ball very well. He's been very sharp, as has the team as a whole.

"I really do feel good about what he's done. I love the work he's put into it. He's done a great job, and we'll see how it all plays out on Sunday."

Newton, who also had shoulder surgery in January, echoed the positive sentiment about his health status, even with lingering questions about his durability over the course of 16 games.

"I feel like a rookie again," Newton told ESPN. "I'm having fun, feeling good, and the thrill is still there."

The Panthers arrive in the opener as 2.5-point home underdogs against the reigning NFC champions but, without Newton at full strength, it is a safe bet to assume that number would have been larger. It certainly helps Carolina to have a No. 1 running back option in Christian McCaffrey but, all things considered, Newton is far and away the most important member of the Panthers roster and having him at full strength is critical as the team pursues an NFC South title.

Carolina faces 50-1 odds to win the upcoming Super Bowl.
