Padres acquire All-Star closer Josh Hader from Brewers in stunning trade

The San Diego Padres have acquired All-Star closer Josh Hader from the Brewers.

The MLB trade deadline is Tuesday at 6 p.m. ET, but the blockbuster deals have already begun: The Milwaukee Brewers are sending All-Star closer Josh Hader to the San Diego Padres. This move is shocking because the Brewers are potentially good enough to win the World Series this year and lead the NL Central. The Padres had a decent closer in Taylor Rogers (28 saves), but he had been recently demoted and was part of the package back to Milwaukee. There aren't any futures changes yet at Caesars Sportsbook for these two teams, who could well meet in the playoffs, but I'd expect a little movement -- the SportsLine Projection Model's sim is below.

Hader has an MLB-best 29 saves but unusually high 4.24 ERA; he ranks second among MLB relievers in strikeouts per nine innings at 15.62. The lefty has one year of team control left after this season and probably is looking at a raise to around $16 million in arbitration.

The Padres sent Rogers, lefty pitching prospect Robert Gasser, outfielder Esteury Ruiz and right-hander Dinelson Lamet to Milwaukee. It's not immediately clear whether Rogers will close with the Brewers or if the team intends to promote All-Star Devin Williams from a setup role, but recent performance favors Williams.

Williams hasn't given up a run in his last 30 appearances (28.2 innings), a franchise record for a single season. Opponents are batting just .115 (11-for-96) against him during this stretch, with 47 strikeouts and eight walks. Williams is 2-0 overall with six saves and a 1.59 ERA in 39 2/3 innings. He has 66 strikeouts and 19 walks.

San Diego (+2200 to win World Series) and Milwaukee (+2000) are done with their regular-season series. It's unclear whether this trade affects the Padres' pursuit of Nationals outfielder Juan Soto. Notably, top prospect C.J. Abrams is still with San Diego after the Hader trade, and he would almost surely be required to be part of any deal the Padres might strike with Washington for Soto.
