NFL Week 2: Derrius Guice 'likely' facing surgery, could miss 6 to 8 weeks with knee injury

The Redskins could be without Guice for almost two months.

The 2019 NFL season began in relatively favorable fashion for the Washington Redskins, with the team taking a double-digit lead against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 1. However, that advantage evaporated on the way to an opening loss and, following the game, running back Derrius Guice felt soreness in his knee to the point where an MRI was needed. Though the final diagnosis remains up in the air, Adam Schefter of ESPN provided additional information on Thursday and it could require a lengthy recovery for Guice.

ESPN reports that Guice will meet with Dr. James Andrews on Thursday to get a "second opinion" on what is diagnosed as a torn meniscus. The reporting describes surgery as "likely" for Guice and, in the event that transpires, the former LSU star would have an expected absence of six to eight weeks.

In Guice's absence, the Redskins will turn to Adrian Peterson and Chris Thompson. While certainly not ideal, the organization seems to be upbeat about its running back depth.

"The whole point of having one lead down back is making sure that guy can handle the carries," Redskins head coach Jay Gruden told ESPN earlier in the week. "If he can't handle all the carries, then you've got to have two. Fortunately, we have (Adrian Peterson) in the building."

While Guice technically wasn't ruled out for Washington's Week 2 match-up against the Dallas Cowboys, a second opinion being gathered on Thursday isn't the best sign and the inclusion of surgery being "likely" provides red flags. Guice remains the most tantalizing talent in the Redskins backfield but, as the team approaches its second game as a 5-point home underdog, they will do so with a weakened stable of backs.
