NFL Week 12 Lions vs. Redskins: Detroit has just one victory all-time at Washington

The Detroit Lions are favored Sunday to do something they have accomplished just once: Win at Washington.

Two last-place teams meet on Sunday afternoon when the Detroit Lions visit the Washington Redskins, but at least we know one losing streak will end. Detroit has dropped three in a row and Washington its past four. Kickoff is 1 p.m. ET from FedEx Field in Landover, Md., with the Lions as 3.5-point favorites on the NFL odds.

Some statistics are just hard to explain and there's one involving this series: Detroit has just two victories all-time on the road in this series and one since the Redskins moved from Boston to the nation's capital. On Oct. 13, 1935, the Lions won 17-7 at the Boston Redskins. A 21-game road losing streak in the series ensued for the Lions – still the only NFC team to never play in a Super Bowl. However, they did win their last trip to Maryland, 27-20 on Sept. 22, 2013, for their fourth straight overall victory in the series.

Matthew Stafford threw for 385 yards and two touchdowns that day, but he's going to miss a third straight game with back issues and it's fair to wonder whether the former No. 1 overall pick's season is over. At this point, why would the team even put him back out there? This week, coach Matt Patricia again said that Stafford remains "week to week" with fractured bones in his back. So it will be Jeff Driskel back under center.

Detroit has been the worst bet in the NFL over the past month-plus, failing to cover its past five games. However, the Lions have won 13 of their past 18 as favorites straight up. They have been road favorites once this season and that ended in a 27-all tie Week 1 in Arizona.

Washington is on a 10-game losing streak as an underdog. Its last victory as one was Dec. 16, 2018, a 16-13 win in Jacksonville as 7.5-point road dogs. The Redskins haven't won as a home dog since Oct. 21, 2018, a 20-17 upset of Dallas, which was only -1.5.

A loss could eventually help the Skins as they chase the No. 1 overall pick in 2002. They are +250 second-favorites to get it behind winless Cincinnati (-200).
