First NFL coach fired odds: Very hot seats in Detroit, Jacksonville, Atlanta, New York (Jets) and Houston

At least one NFL coach is fired during almost every regular season. Who will be the first in 2020?

In back-to-back years, two NFL coaches have been fired during the regular season. In 2019, the unfortunate first one was Washington's Jay Gruden, who got the boot Oct. 7 after his team – then still called the Redskins – got off to a 0-5 start. The other was Carolina's Ron Rivera, who was canned Dec. 3 following an embarrassing home loss to Washington. Ironically, Rivera is now coaching Washington. Which coach might get the pink slip first in 2020? Detroit's Matt Patricia and Jacksonville's Doug Marrone are the two clear betting favorites via SportsLine NFL oddsmakers. Houston's Bill O'Brien moved up a bit after his team was dominated Thursday in Kansas City.

New England's Bill Belichick might be the best coach in NFL history with his six Super Bowl rings, but for some reason his former assistants have largely not succeeded as head coaches -- coaches who have worked under Belichick have combined for a single NFL playoff win (Houston's Bill O'Brien; the Titans' Mike Vrabel played under Belichick but didn't coach under him). Patricia was Belichick's defensive coordinator from 2012-17 before the Lions hired Patricia.

Detroit is just 9-22-1 under Patricia – but a decent 14-17-1 against the spread -- and ended last year on a nine-game losing streak. Although, to be fair, Patricia didn't have injured starting quarterback Matthew Stafford for eight of those. The Lions also had a change in ownership structure this offseason, and owners tend to like to hire their own people. If Detroit is 0-4 entering its Week 5 bye, then Patricia probably is a goner first. The Lions are -3 for Week 1 at home vs. Chicago.

Jacksonville is 22-28 under Marrone and did reach the AFC title game following the 2017 season but has regressed in a big way since and now seems to be tanking after trading defensive starters Yannick Ngakoue and Ronnie Harrison and releasing top running back Leonard Fournette. The Jags may not be favored in a game all season. They do host Detroit in Week 6. Perhaps both teams could have interim coaches by then.

The New York Jets were a decent 7-9 last season, yet Coach Adam Gase is the third-favorite to be fired on this prop. Gase wasn't helped by the fact that the team traded its best defensive player, safety Jamal Adams, to Seattle for draft picks or that its second-best defender, linebacker CJ Mosley, opted out of the season.

Many Falcons fans were stunned that owner Arthur Blank brought back coach Dan Quinn following last year's 7-9 mark. Likely the only thing that saved Quinn was Atlanta winning six of its final eight games -- including the final four (tied for fourth-longest regular-season winning streak of any team entering 2020).

O'Brien isn't just the Houston Texans' coach but also its general manager, so he's obviously not going to fire himself. However, O'Brien has made some really questionable moves this offseason and some are expecting a giant step back for the Texans in 2020. After losing 34-20 to the Chiefs on Thursday in a game that wasn't even that close, O'Brien says the Texans have "a lot to fix."

The future of Chicago's Matt Nagy is tied to young quarterback Mitchell Trubisky, who regressed in 2019 but won the starting job for Week 1 over trade acquisition Nick Foles in a minor surprise.
