Coronavirus: Friday's Cubs-Cardinals opener postponed due to more St. Louis positive tests

Friday's Cubs at Cardinals game (at least) is off due to more bad news surrounding COVID-19.

The St. Louis Cardinals have not played a game since July 29 and an MLB-low five all season because of a coronavirus outbreak on the team. The Cards were set to return to action Friday night by opening a three-game home series against the Chicago Cubs, but that's off amidst reports of an additional positive test(s). Needless to say, the entire weekend series is in jeopardy now. It's going to be near impossible for the Cardinals to play their scheduled 60 games as already they were trying to play 55 games in the next 52 days to make up for all the ones postponed previously.

The three previously best-known Cardinals players to test positive and thus out a while were catcher Yadier Molina (a future Hall of Famer), shortstop Paul DeJong and pitcher Carlos Martinez. It has been confirmed thus far the positive test Friday is also a player.

This is now the 12th consecutive day that Major League Baseball has postponed games because of positive COVID-19 tests. ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball telecast this week is supposed to be Cubs-Cardinals.

Tweet from ESPN's Jesse Rogers: "If this positive test for the Cards is from same batch as previous ones then the incubation period is going to wreak havoc all season. They had multiple days of negative tests. Again, no determination on Sat and Sunday yet."

USA Today's Bob Nightengale: "There's concern within the STLCards organization they may also have another positive test besides the confirmed one earlier today, but will know results within two hours."
