Computer updates Giants' projected win total

The SportsLine Projection Model has updated its projected win totals after the first wave of NFL free agency.

The New York Giants are entering a new era entering the 2020 season as long-time Patriots assistant Joe Judge takes over as head coach and with Daniel Jones now established as the franchise's starting quarterback after a roller-coaster rookie season. Jones showed plenty of playmaking ability, but the franchise finished at 4-12 thanks to a defense that ranked 30th in the NFL in points allowed.

With Jones and Saquon Barkley in place and Darius Slayton emerging late in the season as a reliable receiving option, the Giants enter the 2020 NFL offseason looking largely to overhaul the defense and upgrade its supporting staff offensively. Thus far in NFL free agency, their focus has been primarily on the defensive side of the ball and they've landed some impact players.

The Giants signed former Panthers cornerback James Bradberry to a three-year, $43.5 million deal, giving them a lengthy corner that general manager Dave Gettleman knows well after drafting him in Carolina. They also signed former Packers linebacker Blake Martines to a three-year, $30.75 million contract to add a sure-tackling, sideline-to-sideline playmaker on the inside in addition to taking a chance on Kyler Fackrell, who had 10.5 sacks with the Packers in 2018 before a disappointing 2019 season.

Offensively, the Giants added some offensive line depth by signing Cam Fleming and gave Daniel Jones a veteran backup by signing Colt McCoy. The Giants still need to address glaring issues on the offensive line and at wide receiver, but are down to about $18.5 million in cap space to do it, putting an obvious emphasis on the draft as the front office looks to quickly rebuild to take advantage of Daniel Jones' manageable contract.

Ultimately, if Jones can quickly pick up offensive coordinator Jason Garrett's system and the Giants can find some help up front for he and Barkley, New York should make some strides offensively in 2020. And there's pretty much nowhere to go but up on the other side of the ball, so the fact that the Giants are spending aggressively to address that side of the ball is a good sign.

So while they're still not a serious postseason threat in 2020, the SportsLine Projection Model is projecting marked improvement. It simulated the NFL season 10,000 times and projects that the Giants win 6.6 games on average and make the postseason in 12.1 percent of simulations.

That's a solid jump from the 6.0 projected wins the model predicted prior to the start of free agency. Meanwhile, William Hill Sportsbook currently lists the Giants at 60-1 to win the 2021 Super Bowl, which is tied for ninth-longest odds in the NFL.
