Colts QB Andrew Luck shockingly to announce retirement; Indianapolis futures odds in major flux

In arguably the most shocking NFL news in years, Colts star quarterback Andrew Luck reportedly will retire on Sunday.

As of this writing, the Indianapolis Colts are 12/1 to win the Super Bowl next February in Miami. Go ahead and multiply those odds by at least two. That's because news broke during the Florida-Miami (Fla.) college football opener on Saturday night that Colts star quarterback Andrew Luck has decided to retire at age 29.

This is almost unprecedented. But Luck has been dogged by injures in his career. According to one report, he has suffered the following in his NFL career: torn cartilage in two ribs, a partially torn abdomen, a lacerated kidney, at least one concussion, a torn labrum in his throwing shoulder and a calf/ankle injury. The shoulder problem cost him all of the 2017 season, but Luck was spectacular in his return last year and was named NFL Comeback Player of the Year as Indy earned a Wild-Card spot.

However, the Colts had been very … opaque about the current calf/ankle injury regarding the former No. 1 overall pick. This isn't contract posturing as Luck will be leaving tens of millions of dollars on the table. That means former Patriots third-stringer Jacoby Brissett will take over as the starter. He was solid in the 2017 season when Luck was out but probably best-suited as a No. 2. The Colts were 4-12 that 2017 campaign.

Indianapolis opens the regular season on Sept. 8 at the Los Angeles Chargers in what looked like a possible playoff preview. Not so much now. The spread on that is obviously moving hugely to the Chargers. Your fantasy drafts and Colts projections entering Saturday might as well be thrown in the trash (Brissett will be a popular pickup in fantasy).
