CC Sabathia returns Sunday to pitching-needy Yankees vs. Indians

The Yankees get future Hall of Fame southpaw CC Sabathia back from the injured list for Sunday's finale vs. the Indians.

The New York Yankees host the Cleveland Indians to conclude a potential ALDS or ALCS preview on Sunday afternoon to close a four-game series. First pitch is 1:05 p.m. ET. Every win matters big for both clubs. The Yankees are trying for home-field advantage throughout the playoffs but are neck-and-neck with the Los Angeles Dodgers for the best record in MLB. The Houston Astros aren't far behind, so at a minimum the Bombers want to finish ahead of them for the top seed in the AL playoffs.

While New York is a lock to win the AL East Division, Cleveland is in a dogfight with the Minnesota Twins to win the AL Central for a fourth straight season. The second-place team between those two isn't even guaranteed a Wild-Card spot because both the Tampa Bay Rays and Oakland A's are very good and in the mix.

There's no question the Yankees have the hitting to win the World Series for the first time since 2009, but they may not have the starting pitching – especially with projected ace Luis Severino not having pitched all year and still iffy to do so. A return to health and form by ex-AL Cy Young winner CC Sabathia would surely help New York's title chances. The big lefty returns from the injured list on Sunday to face the Indians, the team he won the Cy Young with in 2007.

Sabathia (6-5, 4.78) hasn't pitched in the majors since July 27 with a sore knee – he didn't look right in his final two starts before landing on the injured list, allowing 12 runs and 15 hits over just 8.1 innings in losing both. Sabathia also started the season on the IL with a knee problem. He hasn't personally won a game since June 24 against Toronto but has pitched well when healthy.

Sabathia lost in Cleveland on June 8, allowing four runs over five innings, but New York is a favorite on the MLB odds at home Sunday because it is nearly unbeatable at home this year. Sabathia is scheduled to be opposed by Mike Clevinger (7-2, 3.34).
