April 6, 2016: Padres make unwanted MLB history in shutout loss to Dodgers

The San Diego Padres were not a very good team in 2016, and that was evident four years ago today.

It's tough to be a San Diego Padres fan these days. The team has a beautiful ballpark, Petco Park, but the product on the field hasn't been good in years. The Padres haven't made the playoffs since 2006 and have had just one winning record since then.

One of the franchise's worst teams over that stretch was the 2016 club that finished 68-94 under then first-year manager Andy Green – he was fired late last season.

That team opened the season April 4 at home against the NL West rival Los Angeles Dodgers. The Padres (+170 on moneyline) started Tyson Ross against Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw, and predictably it was a Los Angeles rout, 15-0. San Diego had just four hits, one off Kershaw. It was the most lopsided Opening Day shutout in major league history.

The next day, the Padres were only slight +105 underdogs when they started James Shields against Dodgers lefty Scott Kazmir. Los Angeles won 3-0. San Diego had just two hits and 26 of the final 27 Padres batters were retired.

Looking to avoid the series sweep on April 6, the Padres were +135 behind Andrew Cashner against the Dodgers' Kenta Maeda in his MLB debut. Maeda allowed five hits over six scoreless innings and the Dodgers won 7-0.

San Diego was outscored 25-0 in the series, but more historically became the first team in MLB history to be shut out in the first three games of the regular season. The previous mark was 26 straight scoreless innings to open a season by the 1943 Browns.

For this season, if there is one, the Dodgers are -1300 massive favorites at William Hill sportsbook to win an eighth straight NL West title, while the rising Padres behind Manny Machado and young superstar-to-be Fernando Tatis Jr. are +1100.
