Advanced model updates Seahawks' projected win total

The SportsLine Projection Model has updated its projected win totals after the 2020 NFL Draft.

Despite the fact that they've made the postseason in seven of the last eight seasons, the Seattle Seahawks are becoming somewhat of an afterthought in the NFC West with the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams representing the NFC in the Super Bowl the last two seasons. However, Pete Carroll and Russell Wilson always give the Seahawks a chance to be competitive and the Seahawks still feel like their history makes them one of the team's to beat in both the division and the conference.

As they entered the offseason, the Seahawks made some early noise by signing veteran tight end Greg Olsen just after he'd been released by the Panthers and also made some solid offensive line additions by inking Brandon Shell, B.J. Finney and Cedric Ogbuehi in free agency. And while none of those three are individually going to solve the offensive line issues that have plagued the organization, they should strengthen the unit as a whole.

Then at the 2020 NFL Draft, the Seahawks focused on defense early, drafting Texas Tech linebacker Jordyn Brooks in the first round and Tennessee edge rusher Darrell Taylor in the second. Both players were incredibly productive collegiately and should help improve a Seahawks defense that ranked outside the top 20 in both points and yards allowed for the first time in the Pete Carroll era.

In the third round, the Seahawks added even more offensive line depth with LSU guard Damien Lewis and then made major investments in the skill positions on Day Three. Seattle drafted two tight ends, a running back and a wide receiver on Saturday and also added more edge depth by taking Syracuse's Alton Robinson in the fifth round.

Seattle has built its success over the least decade through the draft, so you can't really fault their strategy of largely abstaining from free agency and choosing to develop cost-controlled talent. But after failing to make it past the divisional round the last five seasons, it's reasonable to wonder if gains elsewhere in the division might finally leave them on the outside looking in heading into the 2020 NFL season.

The SportsLine Projection Model predicts that the Seahawks win an average of 8.4 games in the computer's 10,000 simulations of the 2020 NFL season, up from 8.0 projected wins prior to the 2020 NFL Draft. Seattle wins the division 15.9 percent of the time and makes the playoffs 48.3 percent of the time. The Seahawks are also currently 17-1 to Win Super Bowl 55 according to William Hill, which is tied for seventh-best odds in the NFL.
