The Preakness Stakes goes to post on Saturday from Pimlico Park at 6:48 p.m. ET. Eleven horses will vie for the prestigious second leg of the Triple Crown, including Kentucky Derby entrants Improbable (2-1) and War of Will (3-1), the morning line favorites in the latest 2019 Preakness Stakes odds.
The field includes four Kentucky Derby horses, a few others that just missed out, and three horses coming off a victory including Alwaysmining (8-1), who's won six straight. With so many contenders in such a high-profile race, you NEED to hear what legendary horse racing handicapper Richard Eng has to say before placing any 2019 Preakness Stakes picks of your own.
Eng was the turf editor and handicapper for the Las Vegas Review-Journal for 20 years and literally wrote the book on wagering on the sport. In fact, he was the author of "Betting on Horse Racing for Dummies," the preeminent book for newcomers. Prior to his work for the Review-Journal, Eng worked as a publicist for the New York Racing Association, Garden State Park, Monmouth Park, Santa Anita Park and Turfway Park.
To say that Eng was all-in on Justify early last year would be a massive understatement. He picked Justify when that horse was a HUGE 100-1 long shot in the Kentucky Derby Futures Book in January, before the horse made his racing debut. He picked Justify to win all three Triple Crown races, cashing big each time.
He was one of the few expert handicappers to go with Maximum Security in the 2019 Kentucky Derby, a pick that would have paid off if not for the unprecedented DQ that led to historic underdog Country House being declared winner.
As far as the Preakness Stakes, Eng has nailed four of the last six winners, including when he took Exaggerator in the 2016 Preakness. Eng believed if Exaggerator got a clear trip in the Preakness he could beat heavily favored Nyquist. Exaggerator proved Eng right. Anyone who has followed Eng's lead is WAY up.
Now, Eng has releasing his 2019 Preakness Stakes picks, revealing his analysis for every horse and where every single one finishes.
One HUGE shocker: Eng is fading War of Will, one of the big race favorites at 4-1 odds. The Mark Casse-trained colt was the horse that got cut off by Maximum Security at the Derby, forcing the disqualification. But War of Will faded and finished seventh in the Derby. After winning three races in a row, War of Will has now finished seventh or worse in two straight.
Eng believes War of Will is due for another letdown after the chaotic Derby. There are far better values than the 4-1 premium you'll need to pay for him.
Instead, Eng is all over an under-the-radar horse with double-digit odds who he expects to compete for a spot in the money and even for the win. This horse has all the tools to put together a complete run and win the 2019 Preakness Stakes. If the horse hits as Eng expects, you could be looking at a MASSIVE payday.
