LeBron James is going Hollywood, announcing he'll sign a four-year max deal to play with the Los Angeles Lakers.
That's not great news for the rest of the Western Conference, but as of now, the Warriors are still the prohibitive favorite to win another NBA championship. The Lakers and Celtics are tied for second-best odds.
In order for LeBron and the Lakers to reach the pinnacle, L.A. wants to add another star.
But who will it be? Can the Lakers sign someone to bring to town, or is a trade the best move?
SportsLine's oddsmakers have set the line as to who will be the Robin to James' Batman:
Which star player will LeBron James be teammates with for 2018-19?
Kawhi Leonard +300
Dwyane Wade +550
Carmelo Anthony +800
Clint Capela +1200
The Lakers have roughly $10 million in expected cap space, not enough to bring in anyone on that list, Wade the possible exception if he takes an end-of-career bargain to play alongside his old teammate.
As for Leonard, he has one more year left on his deal with San Antonio and isn't going anywhere unless he's traded. The Lakers and Celtics have each reportedly been talking with San Antonio, but the asking price is high.
In addition to the four stars, the Lakers are reportedly in the running for Clint Capela, and even Chris Bosh has been linked to the Lakers.
PICK: Anthony is still with the Thunder but the team is facing massive salary cap and luxury tax issues and may consider parting ways, either by trade or cutting. A James/Anthony pairing may sound tasty, but we all saw the frustrations of Russell Westbrook passing it into Anthony time and again, only to never get the ball back.
Wade may or may not return to the Heat, but adding him may not be the splash the Lakers need to overcome Golden State anyway.
That brings us back to Kawhi Leonard. Since LeBron's signing, Leonard has made it clear he wants to join him in L.A. But it's not his decision.
The Spurs would prefer not to trade Leonard to a contending team in the West, so they have yet another superteam to go through. That is, unless the deal is outrageous.
So make an outrageous deal, Lakers. You just secured LeBron James for four years. You're all in.
Look for the Spurs gaining a big haul, and Kawhi joining LeBron with the Lakers.
