Texas native Scottie Scheffler hopes for a big weekend in the Lone Star State this week when the 2022 Houston Open tees off Thursday at Memorial Park Golf Course. The world's No. 2 golfer closed with a round of 62 to tie for third last week at Mayakoba, and he can regain the No. 1 ranking with a victory. He also shot a 62 in Houston last year, a course record, on his way to a tie for second. Scheffler is one of four top-20 players in the Cadence Bank Houston Open 2022 field, joined by No. 12 Sam Burns, 14th-ranked Tony Finau and No. 19 Hideki Matsuyama.

Scheffler is the 11-2 favorite in the latest 2022 Houston Open odds, followed by Burns (12-1), Finau (16-1) and Aaron Wise (16-1). Taylor Montgomery (20-1), Maverick McNealy (20-1), Matsuyama (22-1) and Mayakoba winner Russell Henley (25-1) also are among the favorites in the Houston Open 2022 field.

Before you lock in any 2022 Houston Open picks, be sure you check out the PGA Tour predictions and best bets from golf insider Patrick McDonald.

After spending time at FanSided and NBC Sports EDGE, McDonald joined CBS Sports as a golf writer in the spring of 2022. Now covering the sport from a broader perspective, McDonald still likes to dip his toes into the betting pools on a weekly basis on the PGA Tour.

He takes a measured approach to his outright selections and finished the 2021-22 season up 42 units on those plays, having hit Cameron Smith (22-1) at the Tournament of Champions, Hudson Swafford (250-1) at The American Express, Joaquin Niemann (70-1) at the Genesis Invitational and Justin Thomas (66-1) live at the PGA Championship.

McDonald has hit seven of his 11 matchup plays over the past three weeks and is up more than 14 units on those picks this season. At the Bermuda Championship, he backed winner Seamus Power +100 over pre-tournament favorite Denny McCarthy. For the Zozo Championship, he predicted that winner Keegan Bradley would finish ahead of Corey Conners, one of the favorites. McDonald also NAILED a first-round leader at the Zozo, backing 80-1 Brendan Steele. Anyone who followed McDonald's advice cashed in HUGE!

Now, McDonald has studied the 2022 Houston Open field and locked in his best bets, top sleepers and favorites to avoid. McDonald is again fading McNealy, one of the oddsmakers' top choices! The 27-year-old was T-10 last week at Mayakoba, his fourth straight finish in the top 20. But he is doing it all with his putter, and McDonald says when that runs out, "this hot streak will burst in a big way."

Instead, McDonald is targeting a HUGE long shot to win who would bring a MONSTER payout of 200-1! The expert says this golfer is a perfect fit for this course, and if he can harness his short game, he will be right in the mix. This player has won on tour before, and if he can pull off the STUNNING victory, he would bring a HUGE payday for anyone who backs him! You ABSOLUTELY need to see who it is before locking in any Houston Open 2022 picks of your own!
