Arizona State goes into Big 12 conference play with a surprising undefeated record. Their turn around is the real deal but this is a tough conference opener for the Sun Devils. This is their first time slot of the season that is not a night game. They also struggled in their first true road game of the season at Texas State, digging a 21-7 hole. Look for the Texas Tech Raiders to continue their potent offensive scoring that has scored 52 and 66 points at home. Take Texas Tech.
The Red Raiders were a little sluggish to start the season, but their high-powered offense got in sync last week behind 586 yards of total offense and 4 TD passes from QB Behren Morton. They should be in good shape to build on that performance against an Arizona State club that has exceeded expectations thus far but will hard pressed to keep it up. The Sun Devis overcame a 14-point deficit to defeat Texas State 31-28, but this rates as a flat spot on the road in their conference opener.
Arizona State went on the road last week to face a Texas State team that's better than Texas Tech and won. I have no idea how the Sun Devils are so heavy a dog here against a Tech team that's looked dreadful most of the season.
Kenny Dillingham has done a nice early job for unbeaten Arizona State, but this is the toughest test yet for the Sun Devils, who have not been good defensively at times. There's a reason, after all, that ASU was picked to finish dead last in the Big 12. This is the school's first league game. TTU comes off a 66-point, 586-yard effort in a blowout of a pretty solid North Texas team. The Red Raiders have been unstoppable in the two games top RB Tahj Brooks has played and lost the one he didn't. Brooks is healthy now. QB Behren Morton leads the Big 12 and ranks second in the FBS with 10 passing touchdowns. TTU is 12-3 at home under coach Joey McGuire.
Kenny Dillingham is doing a great job at Arizona State but it might be time to sell high on the Sun Devils. ASU beat an awful Wyoming team and bad Mississippi State at home. They did score a nice road win over Texas State but playing away from home in the Big 12 is a different story. Texas Tech got the offense rolling last week, putting up 66 points and 586 yards vs. North Texas. I make the Red Raiders -5, so I see value in laying 2.5 at home with Texas Tech.
