A superb game is on tap in the Mountain West as Nevada heads to Fresno State on Saturday. The Bulldogs showed their might with a close early-season loss to Oregon followed by a 40-37 upset of UCLA. Yet, Nevada has had the Bulldogs' number with victories in 2019 and 2020 by seven points or more. Take Nevada.
Accomplished Fresno QB Jake Haener must be bursting with confidence that his minislump will stop at two games. Haener threw for 485 yards and accounted for three TDs against Nevada a year ago. The Wolf Pack have not confronted a passing attack anywhere close to Fresno’s. Two opposing QBs were backups, the others lacking star quality. The Bulldogs, 5-2 ATS and straight-up, will relish playing their first home game in a month.
This will be Fresno's first home game in about a month and the Bulldogs haven't much been challenged there yet. The Mountain West's two best quarterbacks will face off in FSU's Jake Haener and Nevada's Carson Strong, a likely NFL first-round pick. I consider the offenses basically a wash but Fresno's defense is much better than Nevada's. To me that and being home will be the difference -- because this is sitting on 3 points, though, I'm taking the moneyline. The SportsLine Projection Model has FSU winning by four but I'm not taking the chance.
