I feel like I've seen not only this game but this setup so many times before. Lacking belief in Utah, recency bias of BYU winning a game it wasn't supposed to early in the season and a Holy War with a single-digit spread. The Utes have won nine straight in this rivalry and four of the last five by a touchdown or more. As a ranked team in this rivalry, Utah has won five of the last six such meetings by 8 points or more. BYU did beat Arizona last week, but it allowed 427 yards and 27 first downs (to 18 for itself). The Utes are far more efficient and talented than the Wildcats.
Utah appears to have landed one of the best fits in transfer quarterback Charlie Brewer, who gave the Utes an instant upgrade in their season-opening victory over Weber State. Since 2010, the Utes have dominated BYU going 9-0 overall. I expect their defense to handle the Cougars. Play Utah.
The Utes have won nine straight in the series but I think the Cougars have the talent to end the winning streak. Jaren Hall is a great athlete at QB for BYU and learned a lot last year sitting behind Zach Wilson. BYU had a 24-3 lead over Arizona last week in the third quarter and forced a punt that died on the 1-yard line. A safety, short kickoff by BYU and two plays later the Wildcats were on the board again. A clear case of looking ahead to this week. This is the Holy War!
It is a stretch to call this a rivalry, even though it has a cool name, Holy War, when one side has won nine in a row. Utah stands to extend its streak with an A-plus rushing defense that has led the Pac-12 three consecutive years. The Cougars did take down Arizona in their opener but were substantially outgained. They permitted 345 passing yards, which should play into the hands of QB Charlie Brewer. He might be new to Utah but started four seasons at Baylor. If not for special teams mistakes, Utah would have beaten Weber State more soundly than it did (40-17).
