Notre Dame RB Kyren Williams was impressive last week against Duke. In what was a rainy, wet day in South Bend, we saw Notre Dame's veteran offensive line take control of the matchup. The biggest mismatch in this game is along the line of scrimmage. South Florida doesn't match up well against the Fighting Irish in that regard.
After watching Notre Dame beat Duke last week I came away from the performance with the same concerns I had about the Irish coming into the season. There just isn't an explosive presence in the passing game, and without that explosiveness, it's hard to trust this Irish offense as such a large favorite. USF didn't look great last week, either, but they used their contest against The Citadel as a glorified spring scrimmage.
Notre Dame will not find the game film from South Florida’s opener helpful. In a glorified scrimmage against The Citadel, the Bulls deployed three QBs. Eleven players had carries and 11 caught passes. Meanwhile, The Citadel's QB completed just four of his 18 pass attempts. Because of quarantining, the Bulls were compelled to start three new offensive linemen. They gained experience, if limited, should they be called upon in South Bend. The Irish did not exactly dazzle in their win over Duke, so an underdog cover is plausible.
